There have been tests that show that there is a very large psychological aspect to eating. In rats, even if the required food/nutrients was directly placed into the stomache, the rats still starved to death.

Yep.

I lived a few weeks completely sustained by nutrition pumped directly into my veins...nothing ever touched my stomach.

Even longer on tube feedings.
