Why has the microwave not been improved?

I know about convection ovens, but it's surprising to me that I can't stick something in a microwave, hit reheat, and it come out perfectly warmed without any stirring.

Why are we stuck in the 60's with microwave technology?

Just keep a trained midget in there with a spork and an anti-radiation suit.

Problem solved.

My microwave is awesome. It has buttons for pizza, popcorn, etc ....

Always comes out perfect. Even has a spinner and it can toast and I think it can "bake" but I don't do that ....

My microwave kicks ass.. I am used to the 'automatic defrost, automatic cook' buttons never working..

But, everything I've cooked in mine comes out great..

Like.. a frozen breakfast sandwich.. I just push the 'breakfast' button and it heats it perfectly without it being soggy. Thanks, technology.

Awesome! Your microwave has spinners? Mine just has a bacon setting 30 second setting, and carousel.. and a ton of reheat/defrost settings that no one uses.

Ooooohhhh a BACON SETTING!!!!!!!!!!!1

your e-peen must be the size of a football field!

I am so jealous of your microwave!!!!

Just so you know, microwaving destroys all the nutritional value of whatever it is you're heating.

What we need is a new heating technology that doesn't use microwave energy.

meh. the only thing i use a microwave for is heating liquids from time to time, or thawing a frozen pizza in a pinch so i can put it in the toaster oven.

is that really true?

My microwave has a reheat setting that reheats food perfectly and adjusts power depending on sensors in the oven. It also has 3500 watts of halogen power to roast a chicken perfectly in 25 minutes. I call that improvement!

go go gadget Advantium Oven!

Nope, all you're doing is heating water molecules.

From the FDA

"Microwave cooking can be more energy efficient than conventional cooking because foods cook faster and the energy heats only the food, not the whole oven compartment. Microwave cooking does not reduce the nutritional value of foods any more than conventional cooking. In fact, foods cooked in a microwave oven may keep more of their vitamins and minerals, because microwave ovens can cook more quickly and without adding water. "

Cheap microwaves have the problems you've described. There are better designs, but they cost more money. Have you never wondered why someone would pay $400+ for a microwave when you can buy a similar looking model for $50?

I don't mind having to stir my food a little, so I have a cheap microwave (but it does have a carousel)

So does convection heating. Microwave ovens probably don't decrease nutritional value any more than convection ovens, frying pans, etc.

The real problem with microwaves is that you cook the food all at once, which doesn't give you crispy deliciousness like more conventional means. That, and there's no time for flavors to mix. Thus, microwaves are only really useful for reheating and a few other limited uses (cooking potatoes, oh so delicious)

I've never seen any scientific evidence that the nutritional content of food is decreased more in a microwave than with other cooking methods, yet I hear people suggesting that this is a fact. Do you have a link to a research paper or something else that is convincing?

I've seen expensive microwaves that work very well. You put in popcorn, it weights it, then sets the timer. The timer gets to 0 at exactly the right time.

Not even a little.

Well since the microwaves are heating water there isn't any nutritional value to lose then....
