There are apps on google play but they do not work or are riddled with ads.

Does anybody know where to download a flashlight app from samsung ?

Nevermind, it is a widget...

We've all been there. We've all at some point in our lives needed a flashlight and we've only got our phone in our pocket. There have been flashlight apps for as long as there have been flashes on phone cameras but fortunately on the Samsung Galaxy S5 they're completely unnecessary.

Here's how you do it, assuming you're running the stock launcher:

Hold down your finger on the home screen until you see options for "Wallpapers," "Widgets" and "Home screen settings."
Tap on "Widgets"
Scroll through the list of all your available widgets until you see one labelled "Torch"
Tap and hold down on "Torch" and place it in an available slot on your home screen.
Every time you need a flashlight, tap the "Torch" icon and you're set! No app will open, just a bright light from the back of the phone.
When you want to turn it off either tap the icon again or pull down the notification tray where you'll also find an option to turn it off.

The process will be largely the same even if you changed the launcher, but how you get to the list of available widgets may vary. And there you go. You may not have even known that a quick and easy flashlight was built into the Galaxy S5, but you do now!

Torch is built into Android starting at Lollipop. You don't need an app.

I guess there's that, but I've never heard of it happening.

Pre 5.0, my flashlight app of choice was nexus flashlight.

And while I realize that the presence of the torch quick toggle is probably not on a person's list of things to check, when found out, that company should immediately be sworn off.

LG did it on at least their G3's. Ask me how I know.

And I've never understood the love for LG/Samsung.

The hardware features on offer have never been enough for me to deal with a slower update schedule, heavily modified Android, and this sort of douchebaggery from OEMs.

Nexus, Moto, and sometimes Sony have been the only phones that have interested me when it comes to Android. I've now put WP in the running for my fall upgrade. Starting to get tired of the Android OEM circus and the constant beta state of Google.

my 4 year old Galaxy S3 had a flashlight built in. It was in the widgets. There was no corresponding app.

I was used to the flashlight app from HTC. It looks great on the screen and has different brightness settings in 3 steps and one off step. I kind of miss it. But now i have at least the light widget from Samsung.

I also like the rolling numbers from HTC more then the push button numbers from Samsung with respect to the alarmclock app.

But my new phone is a lot more responsive than my old one. Unless i start going to the forum without an ad blocker.

On my Verizon S5 it's called Flashlight, seems to be the same thing though.

You can edit the quick settings. Swipe down, click edit, drag flashlight up replacing something you don't need. You'll have to arrange it to what you want. Using a Note 5 currently.

At least on my Note 5 and S5, they both work the same. The numbers roll just like the HTC one.
