Why has May Day (the International Working Class Holiday) become a day for violent protests and riots?

I don't believe the day is marked in the United States (but it is north of the border :D ).

I put this holiday right up there with Labor Day. Why the hell do we take off on a day that is supposed to symbolizes work and the efforts involved? AND why do we need two? Also who is the "International" working class?

May Day is celebrated world wide in cause of the labour strikes that tore this country up in the late 1800's to early 1900's (Especially after the pinkerton massacare). Yet the United States of America doesnt celebrate this day. To replace it they have a lame ass day called "labour day".

May Day is to celebrate Worker's rights and workers acheivements.. somehow US Companies doesnt seem to honor that.

I've not taken history for awhile, but I think May Day was started by the Communist Revolutions (Socialist parties in western Europe in the 19th century). The reason why its hated is not because it celebrates workers, but it has Communist/Socialist roots.

Well.. in case any of you are interested and in the Los Angeles area, there is going to be a peaceful march in downtown L.A. today at 6:00pm. The march will start at Olympic and Broadway and will culminate at a rally at the Federal Building in Downtown L.A. Many community groups as well as students will be there...

My limited knowledge(alleged :) ) is that May Day was first celebrated in the US. Somehow it never took hold though.

Looking back in History, the communist party (then known as a socialist party or marxist party) was involved in lots of propaganda running. They ran most of the backend stuff to the strikes and stuff. But MayDay wasnt started in the Soviet Union. MayDay was started in the US. I can pull up the notes from last semester when my teacher was cribbing on how angry he felt that there is a holiday celebrated worldwide in honor of those who died in the strikes that tore this country apart (especially the chicago area) and yet the united states does not celebrated it. They give us a lame holiday called Labour day to celebrate workers..

Never heard of it. But I'm really interested in what working class is. Everyone I know works except a few select trust fund babies and old some people like my dad.

Homestead Strike - July 1892: A pitched battle erupted between the strikers and 300 Pinkertons hired by plant manager Henry Clay Frick who had been hired to protect the strikebreakers. Seven guards were killed.

Union strikers, my heros!

I'm in london this week looking for my apartment and I bought my camcorder here and I have half the protest on video...

it's basically protest against mcdonald, starbucks, multi-national companies..

and it was funny... they haul some guy away and he was like oye oye, your hurting my arms.. and it was a few feet from me..

there was a few car bombs, etc.. and yeah, some hot chics i try to catch on video..

and btw. the police have no tolerance against violence.. i saw them bash a few people down to the floor...

it's also funny that half the stores are fully bordered up and closed for the day... couldn't go out to buy food either.. very funny..

Because workers are in worse and worse shape. Global capitalism hasn't been good for a lot of people. Health benefits, vacation time, salaries, are all suffering for a LOT of people.
