i dont think you are right.. i am overclocking JUST as high in 2k.. NO CRASHING..

hey i lost 5 FPS in my GAMES.. oh well.. my overall system RUNS MUCH MUCH BETTER!!!

i would take 2k over 98.. ANY DAY 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

<< dont think you are right.. i am overclocking JUST as high in 2k.. NO CRASHING.. >>

hey i didnt say that is always the case. the idea is since win2k has more 32bit codes than win9x series do, it may be somewhat more succeptible to crash with overclocking. glad it worked out fine for you, but i never heard win2k outperforming win9x in terms of overclocking. again, i am using a radeon... except nvidia none seems to have their win2k drivers just as good as the win9x counterparts.

ok, not only is win2k so good that it never crashes (i've noticed), but it also doesn't get slower and slooooower if you leave it on 24/7.... you can't run 9.x without noticing that, damn, you have to restart because it's taking forever! and that's just as annoying as 9.x deciding it's time to restart on it's own all the time CRASH!

stability is not overated for people that don't have time to deal with 9x problems... it seems you just have more time on your hands to deal with reboots. let me ask you a question, have you tried win2k?
A computer is supposed to be able to stay on, keep its level of performance, and not crash! it's as simple as that.

how long does a shift restart take on your computer? on mine it takes about 15-20 seconds, a little time i could spare from playing games or posting at the forums...

no mine does NOT crash, thats the point. when i crash it, i usually know it was coming, so no biggy, altho it occurs very rarely anyway. i did try win2k several times, many people around me use it too. i just dont see what i could possibly benefit from it... maybe you should spend more time tweaking up your win98SE, mine is always fully optimized and never gives me trouble.

i tell you what your problem is: my guess is you are running way to many useless programs in the background. right now i am running 2 applets that come with radeontweaker, 98SE ICS thingy (oooh, win2k doesnt have one, bummer) and thats it. no moss no fuss.

it's not a question of how long it takes... the point is that those 20 seconds don't speak well for the integrity of your computer. that's like saying this car runs fine... you might have to pull over every 20 miles and screw in this spark plug because it gets loose, but that's completely normal and acceptable. would you buy that car? your computer crashing is not a good thing.

this is a computer i am using for web browsing and entertainment, not some nascar racing machine...
HansXP, when you run crappy POS software like AIM you know you are asking for it...
oh it does get lower in system resources. rampage covers some of it, and at the rate i install things and fiddle with hardware stuff, i need to restart like at least once a day. unlike what you imply, i dont restart cuz i fear a crash.

k, well... i guess it works for you. i've had problems with win98se, namely that it slows down if you don't restart over a long period of time.

i said:

<< as for those who appreciate its features, its great for them but win2k really has nada to offer me... >>

happy for you if you like win2k, great. you will never convert me however, i am a happy win98SE user 🙂

AIM Never crashes in 2k. I use AIM all the time to keep in touch with friends that live hundreds of miles away and I have never had it crash in 2k but in 98SE it has crashed a few times and usually right in the middle of an important chat when I am making plans with my friends!

me too... that's why i use aim, not aol. Actually, a lot of people are starting to switch from aol. At the same rate however newcomers sign up for aol. Sigh. hey, this is off topic.

brotherman..

98 is good O/S.. i didn't crash much either.. but WHY not make the move to 2k???

give a try for a little .. i bet you will like it! 😉

i do like the fact that it doesn't SLOW DOWN AT ALL.. like said above! 😀

well radeons NEVER had good win2k drivers for one thing. another major issue is familiarity, i am so used to win9x, win2k felt very awkward at first... i kinda got used to it, but still didnt care much for it. there are quite a few sublte differences in interface and stuff, i dont have willingness to go thru all that for mere reason of restarting once in a while which i do periodically for other reasons anyway. i rate performance above all, performance as in FPS in games... another annoying thing is like i said my roomie has a win2k machine and it takes lieterally 10 times longer to copy files to/from his computer on the network than any other 98 manchine; somebody wanna give me a clue?

BM, now you're just neffing. I'm running a Radeon under Win2K, and everything's fine.

Even if you just use your machine for web surfing, stability is far more important than speed. I would sacrifice speed for the stability of Win2K, except Win2K is almost Win98SE's equal in speed now too. Other than cost and compatibility with some legacy hardware and DOS-only software, there is no reason to stick with Win98/ME.

Regards,
Craig

Everyone here saying that win98se is buggy as hell and crashes often obviously doesn't take care of their computer. They probably have 30 things running in the background, never defrag or scandisk, and never shutdown their comps properly. I keep my computer very clean and have almost nothing running in the background. I never get bsod's and the only crashes i get are from the games themselves, not the OS. For me, i did not see a difference stability wise between win2k and win98se. I chose win98se because it boots up faster and it seems a lot quicker around the desktop.

<< 98SE ICS thingy (oooh, win2k doesnt have one, bummer) >>

Sure it does, rightclick on your network connection, properties, sharing. it works much better than the 98 one too

Windows 2000 is faster with enough ram (256MB preferably), stabler, better security, and is compatible with every app I throw at it including games with only 2 exceptions.
1. All of EA Sport's NHL series I have always had trouble with in win 2k
2. Powerquest Partition Magic 4.0 (It's a very old version, I should just upgrade to 6.0)

I Have a radeon and win2k, i get 99fps in CS...

and im using some drivers that are about half a year old...so hush with the bad ati drivers crud...

although i want a gf3

who in the techworld would ever have thought that WINDOWS 98 SE would have such loyal supporters. THATS SOME SCARY STUFF. Oh, and I'm seriously laughing my ass off at you people saying moronic stuff like 'stability is over rated.' Go back to to the pokemon forum, kids. This is a techie forum. Sorry if I've offended anyone... well no I'm not but I like to apologize.
Win2k IS superior if you take the time to set it up correctly. I reboot my gaming machine once every week or two, and it runs like a champ (win2k, duron@850, 256mb ram). This win2k vs. win98 debate is of questionable merit. Have a nice day, thanks for letting me spill my brain!

i took great care of my computer.. and it would still crash about 2 times a week, and the thing is.. it crashed becasue i would try and leave it on for a couple of days... and it would get so SLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOW that i had to reboot, or a crash would come...

since 2k!, NOTHING

i leave it on for 5 days at a time, ram usage is pretty good too, 🙂 all i do is turn the monitor off... i can't believe you like 98 better than 2k.. my system runs MUCH better!!!!!

oh yea, i ran like 4 programs in the backround...

i do keep my computer very neat!😉 i hate the icons in the sys tray!!

I couldn't have said it better. I have zero stability problems with Win98SE. Considering all I do with Windows is play games, Win2K would be a complete waste of $160 - I don't have any problems for it to solve, and it would only introduce potential incompatibilities (EA games, anyone?). Go ahead and use Win2K if it's best for you - but I'm sick of the blanket assertion that Win9x sucks and everyone should move to Win2K no matter what they would use it for.
