Why get married at all? What is the benefit? Nag, bitch, moan, stupid holiday gifts and trips to see their damn parents!

I love it when teenagers "pontificate" on subjects like this.

It's what you make of it. If you go into it with that kind of attitude, it will most certainly be unpleasant.

Don't worry...maybe you and your right hand will work it out. If not: there's always that left hand who's been giving you those "come hither" looks all these years.

We got it the first time. I'm happily married, so don't base all marriages on yours alone.

As one batchelor to another; I hope you have your flame retardant suit on. :Q I, on the other hand, fear no flames. I am Asbestos Man!:D

You'll hear about the whole companionship thing (I say, "buy a dog, it's cheaper")
You'll hear about the whole life-partner thing (I say, "buy a dog and the car you always wanted")
You'll hear about the whole starting a family thing (I say, "go see a shrink, you need help")
You'll hear about the whole "time to settle down thing" (I say "huh, 30 and balding and feeling the window of opportunity closing")
You'll hear about the whole "need someone to share my triumphs and failures with" (I say "you need and emotional crutch")

I could go on. And on. But I won't.

There is no reason to get married. You can cohabitate for life. These days, marriage is far too risky, financially to be worth the risk. Quadruple that risk if you're dumb enough to have kids. I don't have a link, but I've read in multiple studies that in the past 10 years, approximately 50% of marriages have disolved. Scary.

Every man should have a woman. Every woman should have a man. You don't have to be married to have someone special that you love very much.

Those that say "but if you really love someone, the ultimate expression of that love is the bond that is marriage" make me laugh, because those are typically the folks who have never been burned.

Never had a woman light their clothes on fire. Never had a woman burn their car. Never had a woman change the locks AND call the police AND make a false report of assault...all so she could have the apartment for herself and her new boyfriend. Never had a woman use their child as a weapon against them. That hurts worse than losing any possession. Having your young son say "Daddy, why does Mommy say you are a bad Daddy? I like you...." hurts worse than any kick in the nuts I've ever received. It works the opposite way as well. I know at least two women that got burned bad by their husbands/boyfriends.

Yeah, I'm bitter. And safe. :p What's mine is mine and what's yours is yours. If it doesn't work out, I'll help you carry your stuff to your car and have a nice life.

Sadly, 50% of all marriages in the US end in divorce.
On the bright side, the other half end in death.

Why are you guys all over this guy? If you don't have anything worthwhile to do then to flame him you need to find a life outside of AT...
Seriously.. he is just frustrated, there is no reason for you to make comments about him, his right hand, etc..

It's time to grow up.

Yeah, well if people don't get married, that 50% that make it, won't. So you're saying that we should all cohabitate to prevent the disintigration of marriages?

True. Of those that break up far too many should not have gotten married in the first place. Going out for 2 months and screwing around while at it is a great ingredient in a failed marriage, for instance.

To each his own. Or her own. I don't begrudge anyone anything that they want to do. If you want to dive into water that you can't see the bottom and hope that it's deep enough, more power to you.

I married my wife because I knew she was the one that I wanted to be with for the rest of my life. I was willing to commit myself to her and her to me for the duration. I never viewed our relationship as one of convenience... meaning that if things got tough we could just walk away and shack up with another. Its one of overcoming problems that we face together.

Sadly marriage ends in divorce so much anymore that it has become trivial and the norm. I think that this is largely due to the fact that sooo many get married after only a short time of knowing a person. My wife and I started dating 7 years before we married, 3 of those years we were engaged and during that time we did break up and have problems, but we had gotten to know and respect each other enough to find ways to work things out. After that much time we knew we would go the distance.

I express my love for my wife through marriage. She knows that she can always trust that I will be there for her and that if things get rough I will not walk away.

:( I am sorry to hear that. There are always too many shattered dreams for all involved when that happens.
