Why don't we pay for car insurance at the gas pumps?

I believe a researcher from Rutgers brought this idea up. Instead of paying for car insurance we would pay at the pumps. Doesn't it make sense? Everyone that drives would be covered. We wouldn't have people driving without insurance because it's so damn expensive. I would gladly pay an additional $0.40 a gallon if it meant that everyone was covered and that I didn't have to pay for car insurance. I bet the people that are against this idea wouldn't be so fast to critize it if they got hit from an uninsured driver.

It would never go thru though. Insurance companies would scream bloody murder.

that would create a govt monopoly on car issurance...or each gas station would HAVE to offer it and thus driving a lot of mom & pops out of business. I dunno sounds like a decent idea but overall just too complicated to implement

The government already has a monopoly on things like gas and car insurance.

Seems like a good idea, the only problem is that a person with no crashes would be paying the same amount as the person with 50 crashes.

I'm guessing you don't support federal health care for everyone either;)

Should you and I pay the same for car insurance if you drive a 1000 dollar used car and I drive a expensive new car.
I don't think you would want us paying the same rates.

Not to mention what bootprint said, I don't want to pay car insurance on other things I run on the gas
I get at a gas station.

Sounds like one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard. And I have been hit by an uninsured driver. The mess this would create would cost far more than the extra I pay to cover my self from uninsured drivers.

Government requires car insurance, yet gets money from insurance agencies. I wouldn't be surprised if insurance agencies and the US Gov have some sick agreement to bilk money out of the rest of us.

When will people realize that socialism is an abject failure? Not only will this cost MORE than insurance costs now, but you will not be able to charge according to risk factors. Thus safe drivers will have to pay for irresponsible drivers.

And before you say "why not let the governemnt do risk assessment" understand that the government's hands are tied by Equal Protection. It cannot treat people differently.

So I'll fill up my gas while I'm at work in PA and I will get insurance FOR FREE!

I thought of this idea in middle 1980s when Texas mandated that all drivers carry liability insurance. I was critized for the idea by my peers and it was soundly rejected by them.

I was in my mid teens at the time. Now in my mid 30s Id rather shop around for the best carrier / price. My annual bill for full coverage on my brand new convertable is only $900 a year. Ive shopped around and still cant beat this price.

Not only would it be stupid to make people pay for insurance on other people's vehicles, but I think fraud would go through the roof.

Simple reason this won't happen: While the majority of the gasoline ends up getting used by commercial vehicles (and paid for by businesses), they do not account for a proportionate amount of accidents or insurance money right now. Our Republican gov't would never have businesses picking up the tab on insurance like this. really not a bad thing.
