Why don't they call travels in the NBA?

Whenever I watch the NBA highlights and see a big dunk, almost ALWAYS, they make like 3, 4 or 5 steps without a dribble. Why is that?

They probably don't call it sometimes if it's not too obvious because people love to see dunks.

NBA

The NBA travel rule can be found here [1]. The wording is vastly different than the NCAA and NFHS versions. While the practical results are similar, the NBA rule allows only two steps in an individual drive but also allows more flexibility in choosing a pivot foot in some situations. Practically speaking, however, NBA referees rarely call travelling, and players are actually allowed as many as 7 steps with the ball without dribbling.

You must not watch Lebron James, he takes it to a whole new level. His dunks consist of running all the way from behind the 3 point line to the basket palming the ball and then elevating and dunking over people. It looks KICK ASS until your realise he is doing major traveling. Its kind of sad though when everyone is showing his incredible highlights where he "takes over the game" at the end and dunks over everyone for the win and yet its clear as day that if his name weren't Lebron James (or one of a few others) then he would be called for traveling and be the loser of the game instead of the winner.

It's called a pro-hop - carefully watch their movements. They travel but not as much as this thread suggests.

I think they've let the game get too out of hand to do anything about it.

If they called every foul (that would be considered one) and every travel the came would become a free throw shooting contest and not much more.

You must not watch Dirk work around the basket much. It takes him about 5 steps to get his bird legs turned around and facing the hoop.

They tried to tighten down on traveling, with an "overhaul" at the beginning of this year... but I think it just migrated back.

The NBA, the only place you can pick up your dribble and walk halfway to the basket without a whistling blowing.
