Why don't they always use the highest warp in Star Trek?

Watching TNG, and I'm wondering, why don't they always use the highest warp speed? These guys are like warp 2, warp 3, why not just warp 8 or 9 all the time and be done with it? The Enterprise doesn't run out of juice, even at high warps no?

Wear and tear on parts. That would be like burying your accelerator every time you got in the car.

Is this factoring in the dumb Warp 5 speed limit that they imposed in the series, and the writers promptly ignored?

Yeah it was something as lame as global warming, but for the universe, universal warming. I didn't like that episode.

what the fuck, are you serious?

No, I think he is.
I seem to recall an episode where they discussed their "warp trail" and how it fucked up the space time continuum and caused problems all over the galaxy. They were supposed to be careful when and how they used warp speed.

You're probably thinking of the TNG episode where a certain area of space was suseptible to being damaged by warp speed. The inhabitants eventually proved it to Picard and now the Federation avoids using warp speed there.

Because "She's breaking apart, Captain, she just can't take it anymore!" That's why.

Have you SEEN what those female crew members were wearing on the original series?

I would be in no hurry to get anywhere.

Why don't they go to a faster warp?

I don't know for TNG but for the TOS it's obviously because:

"I haven't got the powa Captain!"
