90 is A-, 94 is A. Its still pretty tough though even with that grading system...

I can't believe this. You can have a 3.0 GPA in Mississippi, but it's a 4.0 in Indiana. I got ripped the fvck off.

Compare classes, teachers, enviroment, peers, etc.

What matters is that you put in the effort -- in the long run, grades in school don't mean didley.

I agree with the "you get what you get" point of view. My ex g/f and I used to discuss this when she was taking some classes a while back - she felt students should get credit for doing homework, for the effort, and get a passing grade even if they failed the exams. I disagreed, for obvious reasons. If you fail the exams, you don't know the material and don't deserve to pass and to advance to the next level. The same philosophy applies when you get a B.

Cleaning the lab/classroom in order to improve your grade is ridiculous. It's unrelated to your understanding of the course content.

Here is a .. joke for you...

What do they call the guy who graduated med school first in class?
Doctor.
What do they call the guy who graduated last?

Doctor.

Yeah, but I got off the phone an hour ago with my dad and he wasn't very happy or excited about my grades this time after seeing some really nice grades last time...

Just tell your dad to stfu and leave you alone, or you're going to become a homosexual child prostitute.

.02% away from rounding up to a 90%, an A-

Neither of them would give in or let me do ANYTHING at all for a point or two. I offered both essays, labs, research papers, cleaning up the room after school, WHATEVER they wanted me to do. Sure, its not a big deal, but when I show my parents a report card, it looks much better to have almost all A's and A-'s! I will have a B in math from my previous A because I didn't do so hot on the first test, in the end, I brought it up from a 66% to a B.

The thing is, I kind of set a standard for myself last grading period with all A's and A-'s... *sigh*

Oh yeah, neither of the teachers gave a chance for extra credit, but my Honors Chemistry teacher did curve our grades...

What are you talking about fair? Would it be fair for you to receive an 87% if someone else in the class actually got an 87% without rounding .. they did score better than you, do you deserve the same grade that they received? I think not. Bottom line, you did not get that .01% or .02%, if you would have scored 1 or 2 more points there and there you'd have it, but you didn't, that's no one's fault but your own, don't blame the teachers for anything.

my HS teacher's reason for not giving extra credit:

should have done the required work better instead of worrying about it at the last minute

P.S. i had to get a 92.5 % or higher (93 after rounding) in high school to get an A-

I feel for ya. I had a phamacology class a few years ago where i was 3 point out of a total 1650 away from a A. And the professor wouldn't give me those 3 points...hense got a B.

Looks to me that tagej is saying the same thing everyone else is. But my schooling system was probably better than yours, so I can understand these things better than you.

Hell...I needed to get like a 93/94 to get an A. Anything below 85 was a C, too!

Still managed to graduate 21st out of about 310.

Same here. You're whining about a 10 point scale? Die.

Hey, mind you, I go to a very tough schooling system. I take 2 honors and an AP class as a sophmore. My school has a bunch of kids acing the ACT's and SAT's, heck a 3.0 unweighted here puts you in bottom half of class. Oh yeah, I got stuck with all the tough teachers too :(

My school is ranked 48th in the nation, your point? A 3.0 unweighted here puts you at around 200 out of 500.

that comment chaps my a$$.

You fricken kids and your feel good, "oh please don't hurt my self esteem otherwise I'll end up being depressed and alone and wanting to shoot up my school"

boo-fricken hoo!

Oh, and I'm 33, and if any one of my son's came to me with this "please make me feel good about myself" attitude, I'd slap them this side of Sunday.

I completely agree with that reasoning. I work hard all the way throughout and not just the last few days of the grading period.

See..try that here and you'll do horrible. If all that mattered was intelligence, HS would be a breeze. However, they actually require us to do work. In my physics class, if you aced every test and quiz but never did the homework, you fail.
