Because they are little more than mannequins; employed soley to make the clothes look good and not distract the audience's attention from the clothing.

IMO models like these look nasty: way too skinny and boney. Creeps me out. PLus you couldn't even take on for a meal without her fussing over what to eat or going for a good old puke afterwards.


Edit: and it's catwalk, not runway. Planes land on runways. Just remember Right Said fred's "I'm too sexy"
