money changes people.

i recently come in freelance to a company where i made 10x what the average employee. i never mentioned how much i made but i think someone leaked it, because one day there was a palpable change. some people just resented me and treated me badly after that.

Sharing salaries is a bad idea, even on this forum. I like the anonymity these forums bring us, that is why I am happy with people telling me they make enough to get by. You shouldn't give out the numbers to anyone unless you absolutely have to provide it.

i honestly don't want to know what people next to me are making. Sure I'm curious, but I don't want to have to feel a certain way, good (feel content and not improve) or bad (feel worthless). It's fine the way I feel now... indifferent. Applies to forums too. So that's why.

The notion that money can't buy happiness is only partly false. You can buy happiness to a degree ... and some people just seem to think that money == happiness. Personally, I do OK, but I feel no need to share how much with anyone. I am happy with it, that is enough.

Talking about salaries tends to create tension between people that are paid well and people that don't. It kinda forces a class thing. No salaries being brought up keeps the group uniform.

Also, given the cost of living/housing differences, making $40k in California is like making $20k in Ohio (literally)

I'm auditing this fool that makes $5mil/year cash. He does nothing and has someone that does all the work for him (gee sounds familiar). Comes in once a week for lunch and rest of the time who knows what he does. Gawd i need to start my own company...
