Why don't people talk about their salaries?

I can understand not revealing your salary to friends, to prevent jealousy, but why keep it a secret on a forum?

It annoys me. Salary information is powerful. If you and I are doing the same job and you are making 5K more, I know what to target when review time comes around.

It also annoys me that you aren't supposed to discuss salary in a job interview. It should be the first thing anyone discusses. I don't care how awesome the job is - if you're only paying 18K/year for it, I'm not going to take it, so let's save EVERYONE some time and get it on the table right away.

I am a software developer. My $1M figure was, let's say "exagerating". Try slashing it by a factor of a hundred or so
