Why don't Netscape users FREAKING UPGRADE?!

I was just looking at our stats... about 7,000 unique visitors. here's the breakdown of most popular browser type, from most popular to least popular:

1. MSIE 6.x
2. MSIE 5.5
3. AOL 7.x
4. MSIE 5.0x
5. AOL 6.x
6. AOL 5.x
7. AOL 4.x
8. Netscape 4.x
9. Netscape 4.7
10. Netscape 3.x
11. Netscape 2.x
12. MSIE 4.x
13. Netscape 4.5
14. Netscape 6.x
......

OK, what's wrong w/ this picture? IE users are upgrading their browsers.. Netscape users are not. 357 visitors had Netscape 4.x/4.7 installed, and only 23 visitors were using Netscape 6.x. WHY!? It escapes me. And now because of this, I have to make sure every page we design works on crappy old Netscape 4... it's a real hair-puller.

Someone shed some light on this.

Hey, I'm using Netscape 4.7 right now. I don't see any reason to
upgrade. If I go to a sight and I can't view they loose my business.
I also use lynx, text based browser when I'm on a dialup connection.

Just out of curiosity do you use Validator
and Bobby to make sure that your website is standards complient.

Personally I like sites with simple layouts but have good content. Too many sites are feature rich and content poor.

Some schools have old computers that can only run old stuff.

But some people just don't know. Put something at the bottom that says "You need at least IEX.X or NetsX.X to view this site, please go here ***, and get the FREE upgrade"

Rememer: not everyone upgrades as soon as something else is available. Some people don't even know how to update and others don't change things that are working. Name the last, over 2000 employee, business, that upgraded their backbone software to the very latest stuff the day it came out.

We may upgrade immediately, but a lot of other people don't even bother.

I DID upgrade to the latest Netscape . . . buggy crap that wouldn't even allow me to access my netscape mail.

I deleted it and installed 4.6xx . . . no further problems.

Since I use IE 5.5x most of the time, I don't need the latest Netscape bugs . . . just to get my mail.

Ok, got it? Any further questions?

netscape 4.x is crap anyway. the POS can't handle style sheets properly or anything, it's just useless. just a useless, utterly useless and ridiculous piece of software. I can't stress how pathetic it is.

Mozilla 1.0 was buggy also . . . I just got sick of it and uninstalled it rather than upgrade the next week to 1.0xx.

The REAL question is WHY BOTHER with Mozilla? Just 'cause it's "open source" and not M$? AOhelL owns them (Netscape) anyway. :p

If I want a really fast/no frills browser that really works - Opera has all the advantages (except "cost" for ad-free).

most people use netscape 4... at work.
and they are afraid to upgrade themselves..
and IT people are too lazy to do it for them.

:D

at least that's the case at my company

My sites are 100% standards complient, and they always work on IE, Mozilla, Netscape 6, Konqueror, and Opera. Netscape 4 is the most non complant browser ever made. I have to create a whole new site just for NS4 users, doubling my work time. I really don't want the business of people who still use Netscape 4...

well for one, netscape 4.x is the last unbloated version (navigator 4.08), so these are smart netscape users. newer netscapes only have the communicator version, not navigator, and communicator sucks ass. also, netscape has a better bookmarking system than ie. netscape stores all your bookmarks in one single html file, ie creates a friggin single file per bookmark, this leads to wasted disk space as they take up clusters and so what appears to be 300kb of bookmarks might really be 5mbs of wasted space. it's gay.

that is why i stuck with netscape 4.08 for so long but finally broke down about 1 year ago. now i use lame ie. bloated programs are the worst. like winamp 3.0.

Mozilla 1.0... which bugs... specify... this far.. how many bugs and security problems have been found in IE?

Mozilla... why bother, TABBED BROWSING, built in pop up stopper... and mozilla 1.1 works.... no prob's here...

My mom and I are using netscape 4.x, I like it better for the sole fact backing up bookmarks and mail is drag and drop, if outlook express made backup easy I would switch over

title of the thread "Why don't Netscape users FREAKING UPGRADE?!"
Don't see anything about why don't netscape users swithc to mozilla? Am I wrong or right? :D If I'm right stop suggesting mozilla! it has nothing to do with the thread.

Exactly. hence my comments about NS4.x being the worst browser known to mankind. it's USELESS! You hear me, USELESS!!!

Another reason NS sucks, I just installed Netscape 4 to test my experimental site ;) and when I uninstalled it it left AOL icons all over!

WHich bugs? Same as Netscape - inability to access my mail (one AOhelL sign in screen after another).

I am really glad you like Mozilla . . . more power to you - but I'm not interested, thank-you.

And thanks for the link aswedc, I promise to avoid it while using Netscape 4.6xx. :D
(again, I don't use Netscape to browse anything but mail)
