It will also be interesting to see how big T604 is, all that extra compliance that they have included beyond what was in the mali400mp4, such as OpenCL, DX9, etc is going to take up more die space.

That's probably the important part. Does it matter if the performance isn't as good as the GPU used in the iPad 4 if the amount of die area is substantially smaller?

you brought up the die size and cost, samsung can eat the small amount of extra cost because they make there own soc's and dont need to pay someone to make them for them.

someone else brought it up way up the thread. I think you underestimate the cost of wafer processing. [/quote]

also the 5250 will go in cell phones while I dont think apple has even the ipad 3 gpus in any phone

It likely will, but given the power draw that anandtech is seeing in the chrome book that they had access to for testing, it most likely will appear at much slower clocks than in tablets. Apple makes separate chips for tablets and phones. Incidently, the A6 in the iphone5 outperforms the A5X in the ipad3

That's an "if" we don't know until we get some die shots. Also from iPad gen 3 to iPad gen 4, apple is likely not to have used any more die size for graphics as the gpu core remains the same (just clocked quicker). Samsung is undoubtedly using more die size, t604 has to be substantially big than Mali, DX compliance does not come cheap.

Apple have traditionally not cared about their die size, clearly the fact that they have market leading profits per phone/tablet allows them to ignore app pro cost to a significant degree.

Yes you beat me too it. Fill rate suggests a slight increase in the clock over ipad3, probably up from 250mhz to 280mhz. Overall gl2.5 off screen results give a x1.8 improvement over the ipad3.

I'll have to take back what I said about A6X. Graphics die size. 554 has double the processing power of 543 and also includes dx compliance, so relative die size will increase. I did say that apple appear not at all bothered about die size. We'll know more when chipworks do their usual die breakdown over the next few days.

Saw that, seen an article that suggested that the graphics in that core would be SGX. I can't link to it as its not for public consumption, and anyhow I would not have much faith in the suggestion. However it is interesting that your article does state a change of gpu core for power reasons.

"You mean 554 has double the processing power". 544 and 543 are fairly equal, the difference is DX9 features.

Yeah my bad..sorted

See chipworks has analysised the A6X. each SGX554 core is 8.7mm2 against 5.4mm2 for each SGX543 cores in the A6. Some of that 8.7mm2 will be dx compliance stuff that apple doesn't necessarily need, but it comes as part of the 554 core.
