Cost to generate your own power is going to be hideously expensive like over fifty cents a kWh.

That's why so many get suckered into believing stuff like this!

Lol always laugh at those "free energy" people. When I was a little kid I always envisioned a setup with magnets where it makes a wheel turn which then causes another magnet to get closer to another which pulls it further, and it repeats. I had told myself that when I grow up I want to build that device. Then I learned about the laws of thermodynamics. :p

Generating my own power would be cheaper in long run if done right, considering hydro rates keep going up but anything that relies on natural gas, well that price will probably keep going up too so yeah probably not work. Idealy sticking with green energy like solar/wind which is the closest thing to free energy you can get, but at my current property simply don't have the room so natural gas or something else would need to be used as backup which kind of throws the whole plan out the window if still relying on an utility. Would be cheaper to move somewhere that has more land to build a bigger solar/wind array to depend 100% on. Then regular high efficiency wood stove for heat.

I still want to do get a wood stove for heat eventually though. That 75% natural gas hike a few years ago was a wakeup call that it won't always be this cheap. It did go back down though. Had something to do with some kind of political thing that was going on.

Its workable and could add value to the house. My main concern would be the constant cleaning. Very similar to maintaining a fish tank. They can be really beautiful but you constantly have to keep up with the cleaning

so if you work nights and sleep during the day, its still workable? i think not.

So how in the world does it keep producing power? I was told in Principals of Technology, an advanced physics class that you can't have less energy in and get more out. Then you have the obvious resistance. Why isn't the load slowing down the motor?

It sounds cool unless you have big trees in your backyard. Falling branches would trash a glass roof at my house pretty quickly unless I used super thick glass.

I think that the sound of acorns landing on my roof would drive me insane as well.

After seeing the Elon Musk Solar City presentation, it occurred to me that simply making a large portion of the roof out of glass could save substantially for home heating costs. And because it is on the roof, there aren't privacy concerns. I guess during summer it could get too hot, but there could be like a retractable shade or something, no? Or just crank up the AC.

You wish to decrease home heating costs by cranking up the AC?

Good point outhouse, im sure that would just totally screw up the idea of having a glass ceiling. If only someone could think of a way to stop sunlight from entering a glass window

If you want to harvest the sun you'd be better off building some separate panels that have double pane glass and a box that is black, and circulate air or liquid in it. Kinda like this:

I actually have a section of double pane glass in the basement, I think it was a spare for one of the basement windows or something, I'd have to experiment with that some day. I think the key is for this box to be very well sealed and insulated and black inside, it will be like a car in the sun. Just not sure how effective it would really be in the -40's.

There's also fancier systems where it concentrates the rays of the sun on a glass tube.

I live in the south....we're always shooting guns in the house. It's easy to patch a tin roof with another piece of metal. Replacement glass would cost a lot more annually than any heating costs saved.
