Maybe for the same reason that we don't call girls with whome we are just friends "girlfriends"? It's probably just one of those cultural norms that slowly grew up and now we don't really know why.

Thats obvious, why do girls call their friends of the female sex girlfriends?

Whole point of the words boyfriend or girlfriend is in reference to someone you are dating depending of whether you are a guy, girl.
 
I don't think it has to do w/ homophobic reasons it just has never been done.

Anyways these sound better.

My friends (not that I don't have any girls that I am friends with but usually when I guy says I am hangin w/ my friends people naturally assume they are male. If they are actually girls then people usually expect a qualifier.)

I refer to them as guy friends, or male friends. We know girls call their female friends their "girlfriends," but have you ever heard them refer to their male friends as "boyfriends?"
