Why don't DVDs have an option for English subtitles...

But have closed captioning 😕

I don't know about you guys but I have hearing problems or something and I always watch a movie with subtitles of some sort, and watching a DVD on my comp i get lost =/

I watch most DVD's with subtitles, I've never seen anything like that. usually, if the subtitles are missing, then so is the CC. just my experience

isn't it called 'Closed Captioning' - aka CC

there is the CC on the tv, and the subtitles on the DVD player, you can turn them both on and have two sets of words on the screen

A lot of movies have english subtitles. What are you talking about? 😕

Some movies don't have english subtitles, but will display the text with CC which is pretty much the exact same feature except CC is displayed through the TV whereas subtitles are displayed from the DVD..

Ok, so what's the problem then?

Some DVD movies don't have CC or English subtitles. Usually (in my experience) the cheapo ones like a lot of the older martial arts flicks that were dubbed in English.

Not all TVs and computers have CC.. But it makes no sense to have CC but no subtitles, since both are integrated on the disc, it's just that the actual source of displaying them is different.

I'd say a good majority of DVDs have English language subtitles... but it is odd that they'd have CC and no English subtitles.

PowerDVD shows Closed Captioned fine. I use it on my laptop instead of English Subtitles unless there's too many white colors in the movie. Very rarely do I find a movie w/o both CC and English Subtitles.. and they're usually independent movies. Just have to check the DVD case before you rent it.

many do not have both due to making either costs money and if one is already done, the other usually is not necessary.

Problem is CCing it by a third party unrelated to the studio usually....sometimes based on a script that is not the final version even....

Subtitles are hired by the studio. Same language to same language usually are pretty accurate, but most conversions have scenes that you can understand, but the real meaning of the lines were way different.
