Why don't airlines offer a season pass?

Because they are already losing money as it is.

A "season pass" would just give people more of a reason to abuse it, crowding up flights for those who don't get the chance to go as often. "Gotta get my $1500 worth!"

You will NEVER see this happen until the arline business becomes a lucrative one.

The flights cost money anyways...the more people on a flight doesn't hurt the airlines. It seems like they'd be able to make up on lost revenue with more people buying passes...

And boy would be abuse it...those long air-tubules would get as reused as condoms in third-world counties...

With this in mind, it would only work if it were for standby ONLY.

You'd have blackout dates aroudn the holidays and the most popular times...

I don't know what you guys are paying but we paid 300.00 a ticket to Canada, and 160 to Vegas...

On the first day of college, the Dean addressed the students, pointing out some of the rules:

"The female dormitory will be out-of-bounds for all male students, and the male dormitory to the female students. Anybody caught breaking this rule will be fined $20 the first time."
He continued, "Anybody caught breaking this rule the second time will be fined $60. Being caught a third time will cost you a fine of $180. Are there any questions?"

At this point, a male student in the crowd inquired: "How much for a season pass?"

Actually, I think they do offer a "deal" like that. It's a Gold member or something like that -- I saw one guy profiled on 60 minutes. Of course, he probably pays out the rear hatch for flexiblility and status so don't expect a posting in the Hot Deals forum anytime soon.

people that will buy this season pass are probably business travellers.

As is, busines travellers pay higher ticket fare than regular passengers, and they HAVE to travel...

It would be a money loser. Those who can afford to take that much time off and travel that extensively can certainly afford to pay more money for tickets piecemeal. Likewise, people who need to travel on a consistent basis (business, family) make up the bulk of profits for airlines in the first place; offering them a pass would be disastrous.

Tho if an airline were created that were based on this alone. It ran on the SHEAR basics, no movies, attendants, dinners etc... Paid the pilots on contract. Priced it on tiers based on the more you pay annually or monthly the more likely you are to get a shorter and more efficient flight. They could even break it up so that you can travel only in your state, state and bordering states, national region (south, southwest, etc...) and then national passes would be the most $$$. You could also have seperate passes for businesses and such at a higher price that would provide more efficient service.

Edit: also make the passes per person and children ata discounted rate maybe.

I heard an interview with Mark Cuban once. He was talking about selling his first company (before Broadcast.com) and making his first million bucks. He and his partner were getting drunk at an exclusive restaurant, and had the waiter bring over a telephone. I guess it was pre-cell days. He called American Airlines and inquired about a lifetime pass. He bought two at $25K each. It gave him the privilege of flying first class without reservations, and if the flight was full he could come on and pick which person he wanted to evict from their seat.

At least that's what he said...

[edit]Here's an article where he mentions it briefly: "I ended up making about $2.2 million. I bought a lifetime pass on American Airlines and I just started traveling," says Cuban. Also apparently I remembered or heard wrong - they were $125K each.

Utter nonsense. I know you're just relaying what you heard, but that is quite untrue. 🙂

I didn't necessarily believe that part, but....the way he portrayed it, he would go to the airport for the express purpose of kicking off people he didn't like the looks of.

It would be fun, but rest assured no airline would allow that 😉

There used to be one, but I have not seen it for awhile (15 years). It was something like a Travel America pass. It had a special fare code and was standby. I do believe the target market was Europeans planning for US travel. IIRC, it was valid for 180 days. It have special rules, so I remember using it as a test case for my test plan when I was writing a fare's engine.

$1500? No way. That's like 5 decent flights. Proably more like $20,000 would be more reasonable. COuld limit it to one flight (any direction) per week or something like that. Very interesting idea...

Not even round trip?

I paid $1500 for my ticket too, but it was from Salt Lake to Cinncinati late December, Cinncinati to Philly early Jan, Philly to Copenhagen, Denmark early Jan, and finally Copenhagen to Boston early June.
