All the improvements they've made to windows over the years and file and printer sharing still does not work correctly. WHY? :|:(

I take it you've never tried to share files over a home network. Otherwise you'd feel my pain.

btw, the key is that DNS is what is usually at fault...

my friend, rely on your switches for arp and such

IE, use IP addresses

file shareing is easy as ****** hell, just make sure all comps are all on the same domain, i just left them on MSHOME, enable shareing, right click share drive.... find from other comp through network or \\shared folder name

takes all of 2 min, might require a restart or 2

never tried printer shareing

I took my desktop home from college. It had select folders shared which both of my roommates could access over the network. I bring it home and none of the computers here at home can access my folders. It says that they don't have permissions, yet I can access my sister's computer fine. All are on the same workgroup. It makes no sense whatsoever.

edit: Oh and I can access my desktop wirelessly from my laptop. go figure.

While I can make it work most of the time, I must say it really does suck ... you shouldn't need to be a tech to keep file sharing working on a home network & even with XP you still do.

<- uses Samba3 on FreeBSD

File sharing works fine
Never tried printer sharing on Samba but done it with Server 2003 Standard, it worked fine for about 85% of the time

\\Shawnscomputer is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.

WTF

http://www.hamachi.cc/

Yep, NAT traversal and encrypted.

holly....what type of tunnel does it create? PPTP, IPsec,L2TP ?!?!?!?!

Honestly, I don't know off hand. I'm pretty sure it's stated somwhere on the website.

there is the forum called "networking" that explains exactly what is going on and why.

Load netbeui and all your networking problems will disappear.

Do not depend on MS browsing to work without proper name resolution. Not gonna happen.

Appearantly it is a mix of cyptography, SSL, and IPsec..sounds nice:D

Yeah it's pretty straight forward. Install, enter name of network to join/create and enter the password. Standard issue file sharing comes next if you like.

*edit*

If you'd like, we can mess around with it. Shoot me a PM.

What OS's are your computers running?

Is any firewall/ norton programs running?

Fire sharing works fine for me. I just have to log in the other computer to get it to work. No biggie I have my short cut icon.

But yes it gave me a lot of crap years ago when I was 'figuring' this network thing out!
