why doesn't this processor work in my machine?

I have a toshiba satellite pro 4280zdvd.
Currently installed is a pIII mobile 500mhz, 100mhz fsb, 1.6v s-spec #SL43P

Processor I have that does not post:
PIII mobile 850 100mhz FSB, 1.6/1.35v s-spec# sl4ag
http://processorfinder.intel.com/script...5&PkgType=ALL&SysBusSpd=ALL&CorSpd=ALL


The only difference i see with these processors is the Thermal Guideline. Besides the possibility of the processor being dead, what could cause this... any fixes?

maybe the bios in the computer was never updated to use that chip?

It could very well be a bios issue and given the poor history of bios updates for laptops...if it is bios then it is highly unlikely that you will find a flash that will fix it. I would try resetting the bios to there default setting if you can and see if that does anything.

the 1.6/1.35v is speedstepping. 1.6=full speed 1.3=reduced speed. the 850 can handle and is spec'd for 1.6v

I know, but that doesn't mean the motherboard knows how or when to deliver which voltage.

It's probably designed for the Katmai (?) core P3s, and the 850 is a Coppermine.

BIOS updates are available for your laptop in the Toshiba Support section on their website. I would try this but it might not work if the maximum FSB stepping available on the motherboard is, say, 5 or 6.

Even with the BIOS upgrade, the system still doesn't post. It appears to be a stepping incompatibility.
