Why doesn't the Big 10 make an all-out push to add Oklahoma and ND?

Ahem...

OU leads all public universities nationwide in freshman National Merit Scholars enrolled. The Princeton Review ranks OU in its top 10 public schools in the nation in terms of academic value. And this year, OU became the state's first public institution to achieve the Carnegie Foundation's highest tier of research activity classification.

The Big 10 is not going to take someone that is not in the AAU.

Nebraska lost its AAU status after moving to the Big 10 and hopes to get it back in the future.

big10 will probably expand to 16, ND joins if they are smart, but UT and OU probably end up in pac12. acc football in serious trouble. miami might just straight up get shut down, and the few remaining decent teams will probably get invites out of there.

"Miami might just get shut out" in what way? Are they not happy in the ACC ?

I am a fan of a Big Ten team. When I see other Big 10 fans of other teams I feel friendly toward them. I am not sure if Miami were in the Big 10 I would feel the same. BTW I do realize Miami in the Big Ten is not really going to happen.

And it is about positive competition is all sports, not just football, though football is the biggest money maker.

-snip-

he said "shut down".

He's talking about their NCAA violations that might get them the so-called "death penalty". I.e., football program is dropped for several years.

UND will not join the Big 10. They like their NBC contract too much. Plus, why get blown out by Ohio State, Nebraska, and Wisconsin every year when they can barely lose to Air Force and Navy?

ND may end up being forced into a super conference, if things keep moving along like they are, and ND already plays three B1G teams every year anyway. Why not join the party? :D

I'm hearing a lot of people saying ND will join the Big 10 eventually.

As far as their TV deal, given their crappy performance over recent years many speculate the TV contract which expires in 2014 (?) will not be nearly as generous if renewed. Then there's the issue of automatic bowl qualifying.

^ Not to mention that revenues from the Big Ten Network are rising steadily, and will likely eclipse what Notre Dame gets from its NBC contract by the end of the decade. Especially if ND continues to fail to find its way.

Weren't you the guy that was saying there is no way that ND would be in the B1G?

You do realize the Jim Delany has twice tried to get ND into the league - back in 1990 and in 1998, right?

I highly doubt if OU came calling the B1G would say "no were not interested".

Of course you would, you don't understnd the Okie/Okie State connection.

You must be a Michigan grad :D

On the other hand Okie State looked really strong against Arizona tonight. Maybe the B1G should take the Okie/Okie State package. :hmm:

It's going to be hard to get both of those schools up to AAU standing though.

Do you really think ND will have a problem with getting into any bowl if they have a great season? Please, they aren't joining a conference. And no, the big10 won't offer more than their TV contract + money paid by other schools to play them.

You do realize as of two years ago, each B1G school already takes in more revenue from BTN than ND does from NBC? The BTN network continues to expand, while interest in ND football on NBC is waning. ND's current contract with NBC does go through the 2015 season. And as of this year, many of the ND games will be on Versus instead of NBC, further degrading ND game ratings.

Who gives a dam? It's not what they're worth now, but in the future. And if they can get a deal similar to UT then it'd blow away the highest big 10 earner's (OSU) revenue for the past 5 years in 2015.

Oh and FYI, interest isn't "waning". It's waning about as much as the Yankees from 2002-2008 (e.g. years they didn't win a ring).

LOL, apparently steadily falling ratings over the last 5 years isn't waning interest :D.

Oh, and nice meaningless pie-in-the-sky blog link you have there.

There's nothing to dispute in the link. If Notre Dame gets a bigger deal than Texas's 300mil, then why the hell would they want to go to any conference?

Stop crying, Notre Dame was still averaging a 2.1 share per game last year.

Who's crying, certainly not me?

And yes, there is plenty to dispute in the opinion piece you linked :)

So are you disputing that Notre Dame cannot get their own network deal like Texas in 2015? There's no reason for them to join a conference when they have a huge payday in the future. Now all they have to do is start winning so people outside of their fan base actually have a reason to hate them again.

I don't think any network will be dumb enough to do anything similar to what ESPN has done with the Longhorn network. So in a word, yes, it will be hard for ND to get a deal like Texas got.

The bottom line is that Jim Delany is not the Big Ten. The Big Ten and Notre Dame have glanced furtively at each other on multiple occasions, but there have never been any serious offers tabled by either party.

Whether or not money will eventually trump the sticking point that is Notre Dame's religious affiliation, only time will tell. Notre Dame is a good fit academically for the Big Ten, below Northwestern, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois and above the rest of the conference. Nebraska was pushing it academically, and OU is definitely not up to Big Ten academic standards.

I'm happy the way the Big Ten is now. I'd rather have the CCHA dissolved so hockey follows the arrangement of football, hoops, etc.

The B1G has already announced the 6 team hockey league starting in 2013 - Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin. The CCHA and WCHA will probably merge their non-B1G teams into one.
