Why doesn't the Big 10 make an all-out push to add Oklahoma and ND?

With the Big 12 teetering all of the big conferences seem to be licking their chops - I just saw that the Big East is setting itself up to pick up teams if they fold.

Is the Big 10 happy with what they have now? I would think an OK/NEB game every year would be a huge moneymaker.

I know ND would be tough to get, but putting them in a conference with Ohio State or Michigan would also generate serous $, and you'd already have some natural in-state rivalries for them.

I'm not sure what Oklahoma's academic reputation is, but it seems like it would make sense imo.

I would think UT would be a better fit for the B1G than Okie, but I'm guessing both will end up in the Pac-16 :)

Fuck that. We don't want Notre Dame. I'd rather have Pitt.

Notre Dame had their chance to come over when they were a decent team. They can come crawling back now that they suck and hopefully get rejected.

Notre dame has no desire to join a conference in football. They have their own tv deal, and they have 100% control over their schedule.

How long has it been since they've been relevent? 15 years? More? Though I guess alot of people tune in to watch them lose. I know it's something I look forward to every year in their bowl game.

Texas would be good, but I just don't see that ever happening.

OK would be dangling out there, and I was thinking about their old rivalry with NEB.

OK/NEB on one side, OSU/Michigan on the other would be great for football at least.

WTF, Pitt seriously?

How about Syracuse or Rutgers?

the big 10 should stay with what it has. picking up Nebraska was huge in my opinion. ND will never join the big 10. it would have to join the conference for basketball, hockey, and baseball. it has a good setup with the big east.

the money, TV deal, and schedule for the football team is better than what they would get with the big 10. if USC & Navy were not on the schedule in the future it would be a travesty.

it is funny to me that everyone considers ND irrelevant too. they are one of the few teams not tied to a schedule that can be used as a barometer of how teams should stand. they also generate a ton of income for the opposing team when ND travels.

big10 will probably expand to 16, ND joins if they are smart, but UT and OU probably end up in pac12. acc football in serious trouble. miami might just straight up get shut down, and the few remaining decent teams will probably get invites out of there.

Yup, ND won't join sht. They're not going to lose money to join some scrub of a conference to be hemmed into some crappy Leagues/Legends division. Ain't gonna happen, even if it's Notre Lame.

You probably don't follow college sports much. Or in the least, basketball and football.

Wow, really. You suggesting that the B1G would want Pitt, makes it look like you don't know much about college sports :D. Or you are Mark May :hmm:.

There's more to the Big Ten than sports. Not a snowball's chance in hell a Catholic institution gets in - Northwestern's the only private school in the conference and it's explicitly non-sectarian.

That's noble, but the cynic in me has to believe that in college sports $$$ trumps all; if the Big10 could get it's hands on the money ND would potentially be worth as a member I can't see them saying no.

It would raise the value of the conference significantly in future deals.

LOL, the B1G has already tried a couple of times in the past to get ND into the league. Both times ND rejected the offer.

scuttlebutt in B1G country is that ND and UT made a joint presentation to B1G about joining the league in 2014.

B1G doesn't want OU by itself. while getting better academically it's still not up to aggy's standard, let alone B1G's usual standards. though B1G let in cornaggy last year, showing that it's all about the $$$.

UT might demand that B1G rule that non and partial qualifiers can't play, which would create a giant fireball in lincoln.

apparently pitt is seen as a stepping stone to ND. not sure why that is.

The latest from "PURPLE Book Cat" on Northwestern Rivals board:

"The Big Ten just concluded a call with representatives from the University of Oklahoma Board of Regents, initiated by Oklahoma.

The call confirmed that the Big Ten would NOT extend an invitation to Oklahoma to join the conference."

well - that settles that, I guess.

It might have had something to do with T. Boone Pickens wanting to drag Okie State along with U Okie? Who knows - maybe the Pac1? will take them both?

UND will not join the Big 10. They like their NBC contract too much. Plus, why get blown out by Ohio State, Nebraska, and Wisconsin every year when they can barely lose to Air Force and Navy?

ND may end up being forced into a super conference, if things keep moving along like they are, and ND already plays three B1G teams every year anyway. Why not join the party? :D

B1G pays more than NBC does.

Ahem...

OU leads all public universities nationwide in freshman National Merit Scholars enrolled. The Princeton Review ranks OU in its top 10 public schools in the nation in terms of academic value. And this year, OU became the state's first public institution to achieve the Carnegie Foundation's highest tier of research activity classification.
