costume made from material from krypton. that can blow off that "why doesnt it wear away theory"
there is no simple answer. most reasons stem from writers persepctive. didnt look that far in advance, was bulky, not streamlined, etc.
that thin a layer or lead really effect kryptonite? if substance is not of this earth, than it may not apply to our normal rules.
best point made so far is that it would remove achilles heel. it defies logic more to remove a vunerablity from a character than to suggest that a fictional character is not being sensible.

Yeah, Steel, but he's an weapons designer who built his own suit when Supes died.

The lead suits Doctor Hamilton developed for him came early on in the John Byrne series.

He gets his power from being near a yellow star.

Lead would block the light from that star.

the suit doesn't burn off because anything within an inch of his skin absorbs his powers or something...they explained it in Death and Life of Superman

Then why doesn't Lana get his powers when they are kissing and since she hasn't learned to control the heat vision yet she should burn a hole through his skull....

Just toss on a mask when kryptonite is around and he is good to go :)
it would need to be solid lead to completely block radiation, otherwise it would seep through. keep in mind that hes extremely sensitive to this stuff, so you cant have it leak in at ALL. therefore he'd have to wear a very cumbersome suit. no mask bullshit, itd have to look like those suits that people wear when handling dangerous viruses. Either way, it couldn't be skin tight, and therefore wouldnt receive that aura bullshit thing and could be easily damaged/punctured.

He tried this when he was Superboy. He had a belt with a lead spool but it would melt when he flew.

Yep, I used to collect comics when I was a kid.
