I tried to open a .jpg image with Windows included Paint.exe and it would not open up. The error reports the file format is not supported bitmap file. I knew on my other computer with same version of OS(Win Me) was able to open jpg under Paint. How can I fix this and what is the cause?

<< Use Pbrush.exe. >>

Makes no difference whatsoever.

"Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported."

Did you have any graphics programs installed on your other computer? IIRC installing ACDSee or Adobe Photoshop (can't remember which one exactly ) patched up mspaint.exe so that you could save in jpeg or gif

The ME Help file in PAINT or PBRUSH.EXE says this:

You can use Paint to work with pictures, such as .jpg, .gif, or .bmp files. You can paste a Paint picture into another document you've created, or use it as your desktop background. You can even use Paint to view and edit scanned photos.

However, I have three systems using ME and JPGs do not open in Paint just as you have found. I have never noticed this because I open all my JPGs with PSP or HiJaak or QuickView Plus.

Will do some more experimenting. There are all kinds of programs to view JPGs, but that is not the point right now . . . a boldfaced Microsoft lie is. :)

OK . . . I went to the WinME CD and extracted a fresh copy of PBRUSH.EXE from the CAB files . . . and no dice! It does not open JPGs. It does not open GIFs. It only opens JPGs.

The Win98SE PBRUSH.EXE used to do GIF files. I'll try extracting that and seeing if there is a difference.

OK - I found the answer. It is in the MS Knowledge Base.

Paint

What is boils down to is simple. In order for Paint Brush or Paint to be able to open other than BMP files, you MUST have another Microsoft program installed that contains the filters for those other files, i.e., GIF and JPG. #rd party filters don't count. Another case of supreme Microsoft arrogance.
