Why doesn't my dimmer switch work?

I rented a new house recently and I have this chandelier that's on a dimmer switch. The switch only turns the thing on or off though, no in-between. What do I have to do?

i'd ask the people who rented you the house.

I hate to bug landlords with little stuff. I just got them to pay for me to paint the rooms.

It's just that the rheostat is worn or just bad . (the component that adjusts the lighting)

A new switch is only $4.-20. depending on type . Most common/cheaper dial dimmers are around $5. though
