Why doesn't CMOS retain its settings?

Hi all.
for some reason my Bios settings continue to reset to its default settings and its previus bios version (my motherboard has a bios backup protection thingy)? I also once every other boot get a checksum error? I've done some research on this and everything says that its the cmos battery going bad so i put in a new battery and i still get this problem? I'm not sure what is going on? The only thing i can think of and the only thing that has happened which may have "broke" something is that before this all started i was cleaning/organizing the wires in system and a little plastic doohiggy got caught in the cpu fan which i did'nt notice, so when i turned on computer i saw that the fan was being blocked, it was still moving but very very slowly. I shut down the computer, fixed the blockage and started up again and everything was fine, system worked with no problems (thank god :) ). But then after about a week i started to get this problem with Bios reverting back to the "saved" backup of the previus version and resetting to defaults. I can use the system fine once i reset some of the Bios settings that need to be reset for my hardware ie: AGP video back to agp setting from the default of pci. Once i reset everything which is needed system runs fine. Oh and also this problem only happens when i go to startup the computer the 1st time in the morning. Once i've reset Bios manually it runs fine even if i re-boot, its just the 1st time i start it up in the morning that it has this problem. Do any of you think i may have damaged something when the CPU fan was blocked? Also perhaps i could just re-flash the Bios to its F10 version (which is what it is flashed to right now but continues to revert to previus version of F8) would this be a bad thing to do, re-flashing over the same Bios version? This is a very old motherboard (Giga-byte's GA-K8NS Ultra-939) so i'm stuck with an old Bios (F10 being the latest) as Giga-byte no longer supports this motherboard. Well hopefully there is a simple solution to this and someone can help. Oh also i can't discover if there are any post beeps as i am Deaf and i don't know anyone who could listen for me so i don't know if i am getting any other warnings. Just a note in case anyone asks if there are post beeps. I guess i really need to start thinking of upgrading to a new system soon :) . Ok thanks anyone and hope all this made sense as i'm not very computer smart :).

My system :
Giga-byte GA-K8NS Ultra-939 Motherboard
3 gigs of Ram
Vista Ultimate x64
nvidia GeForce 6800

Thanks for the suggestion but as i've mentioned i already changed the battery and it did'nt fix the problem. Enless your talking about another battery i don't know about? I think what my problem was/is is that i didn't reset/clear the cmos right. All i did was pull the battery out thinking this would clear it. I was doing some reading and it was suggested thatn i also short the pins on motherboard as well so i did this and so far it seems to have worked. Me being stupid i guess :) . Thanks for your help
