Why doesn't any company make a PC with the form factor of an Apple?

I'm not an Apple fan because there is just so much you can do (games wise atleast) on a PC. But why hasn't anyone (dell, compaq, ibm, gateway) made a PC with the form factor of an Apple? The Apple Titanium and the new iMac are both real nice, I would love one if it was a PC.

Gateway once made some cool computers... One was an all in one PC that resembled an imac with integrated everything and they also made a neat flat screen LCD based desktop with the cdrom the popped out the side of the screen, etc.

They never took off big...

My Pastor just bought one of those Gateway LCD based desktop machines. Had a P3 1.2GHz, 128mb ram, 40gb hdd. That machine was pretty impressive for taking up such little space.

I once saw a case mod where a guy put an ATX-based PC in a sweet Chrome G4 case. It looked awesome, and that case is fantastic for working on and upgrading, due to the flop down side, but you have to buy a Mac and throw out the guts to get the case. What a drag.

The new iMac does look pretty sweet and the top-of-the-line has a 32MB GeForce 2 MX, 60Gb HDD, a Superdrive (DVD burner), and that gorgeous swivel flat panel monitor. At only $1800 it's awfully tempting... even for a PC user.

hmmm Form Follows Function ... if its gonna crunch numbers .. who cares how it looks?
PCB makers would have to rethink their Motherboard Architecture to make them fit into places like that, That would increase costs as they may have trouble getting traces to fit how they need them to, so they would end up with more layers. They would end up costing a good 20% to 30% more with Absolutely no performance advantage. Most people are not willing to spend an extra 50 bucks so their computer will fit into an odd looking ORB with noo room for additional components. Now I do agree that there is a market for od shaped computers, But I don't think we will be seeing many (excupt custom Jobs) until the IT sector fully recovers, and Manufacturers are at a point when they can take a risk without as much worry.

Apple are all artsy .. so thats why they get those artsy cases.
PCs are more workhorses than showhorses ... at least thats how I always thought of it.

<No one can touch Apple in terms of design now or ever. >

I agree...But who cares about design. Performance is what counts. All I hear is that apple are good for graphics and sound..that may be true but I can do the same thing with my pc and many other things Apples can't do...like host a website or mailserver, or play every game that comes out on computer.

I really like the looks of the new MAC that was introduced. Only problem is that I don't care for the MAC operating system. Everything is so blah looking in the operating system(blue and white colors with very little text on the screen) it makes it look like an alpha program, and of course the limited software selection.

And even though I really like the thin LCD it has, and the case design, I would bet that its not very upgradable in that limited small size. And I would bet it generates a lot of heat inside that cramped space.

One thing that does annoy me with my PC is the zillion wires I have coming out the back of it. But I still would never give up my PC for a MAC.

Actually, IBM with its home machines is really pushing for better-looking designs! The tiny machines with a standard flatscreen - in fact I think they had the new iMac look BEFORE the new iMac! By at least 2 years!
Lemme' find a link...

Ummmm, actually Apples can do this rather nicely, though you are right about them having a more meager software selection (particularly games).

Mac OS X Server

Design really does it matter, wow get an IMAC so what happens when your monitor takes a walk your computer is pretty much hooped, and IMAC's have huge heating issues.

I personally cant stand the design of thier monitors, I personally dont like thier OS (linux is better),and I personally cant stand thier stupid little mouse! So I personally just dont like thier design seems more like a little kids computer to me.

I recently went on a journey to find some new Icons. What I found was some super cool Icons on a bunch of Mac fansites. Though Apple would have to do a lot of hardware/software improvements before I'd get one, their OS and computer designs are way ahead of the IBM PC world. Perhaps WinXP will cose the OS gap, now who will begin offering us flip down sides(that case owns) and something more asthetically pleasing than the mighty rectangle?

I always thought PC notebooks were pretty stylish but the Apple ibook with integrated wireless networking is pretty awesome...

It looks like for desktops LCD's are the wave of the future. 1600 by 1200 on a 15" screen is awesome on my Dell Inspiron 8100

Well you certainly have a point there with mac os X server, but they are only able to do this just now. Plus mac OS X is based on Unix so its not entirly their doing.

With Apache being part of the OSX installation, setting up a web server is there now, so apple can certainly do more than graphics and sound.
