Why does XP take more than one attempt to install updates?

A fresh install means about 11 critical updates to install. I let XP DL the critical updates, but it failed to install two of them. An IE6 Security update, and a WinXP Compatility update. I let the system reboot, and DLed those that failed, and they succeeded. Why does it take more than one attempt?

or is this just general MS quirkiness?

Sounds like end user error to me.

Hehe seriously, I think it's just a bad download due to heavy traffic on thier site. Imagine the stress Windows updates must be under at any give time... mistakes are bound to happen.

I always find it easiest to install Microsoft patches one at a time and reboot in between.
