Why does XP give an error message moving AVI files?

:disgust:

Hello,

I have been running XP for some time. Whenever I move an AVI file to a different location, XP gives me an error message :
"Error Moving File or Folder"
"Cannot move xxxxxxx : It is being used by another person or program"
"Close any programs that might be using the file and try again"

Without closing anything, I simply drag and drop the file again (exactly as I had in the first place), and now it works. Sometimes I have to repeat this action 3 times, but it almost always works on the second try. As I said, I do not do anything else; I do not unload any program, I do not change the directory, nor do I do a copy. I do not have any media player running, nor is one loaded in memory just waiting to run. When I view an AVI, the default player is MicroDVD which is not running when I see the error message.

In Windows Explorer, I am not using the preview pane where you see a little version of your AVI file. I have standard Details view as my default view for any folder.

Any ideas appreciated.

I too am a victim of the file in use error message you are describing. I am not sure but i think it has something to do with the preview pane atually having the video open. The only fix I have found is to not use the preview pane at all.

If you have the video selected in the preview pane, then you will not be able to move the file until you de-select it. Also, sometimes you might have to select some other file in the preview pane to "de-select" the old selection.

Even if you have the folders pane open, the preview pane is still working in the background. I have yet to figure out how to disable it completly. I get this message constantly. I'm so used to it, I just use groups to move instead.

Cmon guys, read the post! I am not using the preview pane. I have a standard Explorer view. When I click on an AVI (or image for that matter) I do not get any sort of preview as I have turned that feature off. I still get the error message however.

This does not happen on my dual boot machine when I run Win2K with the same files, so it is something native to XP. I am pretty sure the OS is trying to get a lock on the file because it identifies it as a multimedia file, but I want to know how to turn off the locking. This error is really annoying in XP.

Thanks,
Rooster

Please read my response again, even with the preview feature turned off, it still uses the preview window. It's simply set preview_pane.Visible := FALSE;
