You install a new program and you can't run it because of a cryptic error message. Turns out you need Visual C++ runtime libraries. Isn't that made by Microsoft? Why wouldn't they just include it with the OS?

Okay, let's hunt for that installer. Do I need 2008, 2010, 2012, or 2013? Because they're all completely different and not included in the same installer. No, that would make too much sense. Do you need 64-bit or 32-bit? Because they're also different, incompatible, and not included in the same archive or with the OS.

Oops, I downloaded the update for Visual Studio, not the runtime libraries. Let's go back to that website and hunt through a list longer than my arm. What's SP1? No, I do not want to install the Bing Bar, asshole.

Of course they couldn't just include it with Windows Update. That would be too convenient.

And Windows Update. Man, this piece of crap. You have to run it, download, install, restart, run it, download, install, restart, run it, download, install, restart. Repeat this 20 more times and just maybe you'll have all the necessary updates. Maybe.

The "I'm a techie" circlejerk is here at reply 1.

It's counterintuitive and leaves room for error at every turn. Let's not forget the fact that these are important libraries needed to run many programs and are made by the OS manufacturer but not included with the OS. It's like someone selling you a car but making you install your own gas tank.

And Windows Update is bad even when properly used.
 
shrug, mine works fine. Why doesn't your software provide a direct link to the libraries needed? Seems that would be more efficient.

Try setting vCenter up with SQL 2012 on 2008R2 servers. 😛
 
I don't recall ever having the problem you're having. Every time I needed any runtime libraries somehow the program or the documentation included with it let me know exactly which one to get or even included it in a folder in on the program's installation media. Windows update never bothered me either. I just let it do it's thing and click the "install updates and shut down" key when I was going to shut down anyway.
 
You should switch to Mac - anyone can use it.

Ah yes, those installers. They often fail for no reason at all so you have to download it from Microsoft.
 
What's the option? An Apple system which is like a Play-Skool toy that you can't do jack shit to change. It's pretty much binary, one or the other. Either you have to know your way around or you're not allowed to venture outside. There's no sensible way to accommodate both the techie and the troglodyte with the same O/S.

I sure wish my win7 had shipped with visual c++ 2013 run times. Sometimes I think Microsoft is just not including this crap to be difficult.

Same with Windows. I own and use a Mac as well. Neither is perfect, but I don't see the flaws/issues most people complain about either or of these OSes.

I honestly have no idea what you've done wrong. Maybe you should ask where you can post an ad to get someone to pay them to fix this for you??

You're an idiot who throws a hissy-fit because you lack the brainpower to handle things that are so easy the rest of us don't even notice that they could be problems.

And I really did address your point Zippy, but like your problems with Windows you were just too dense to figure it out. The more latitude a system allows for the power user to go outside the norm the more brainpower it requires. There isn't any other way, If it's that troubling to you that's a PEBKAC situation. Either learn what you're doing or get a Mac. Are you seriously so flustered that the prospect of knowing whether you require a 32-bit or 64-bit app is too much to deal with?

i rarely use windows anymore at home. it's on my desktop pc, which i just don't use much. my laptop is a dell running osx, and i like osx a lot more now. i mainly use it to browse the net, irc, and do development on it.

installing applications on osx is definitely simpler than on windows, but not that windows is difficult or anything. but it's usually just you dragging an icon to the application folder shortcut that is in the same folder as you are dragging the icon from, and it just installs it.

Installing software on Windows isn't difficult. It's a few more clicks and not accidentally installing the spyware that comes prepackaged. I'm more upset that necessary component to run the software aren't included with it.

So... again your issue is with the software package you are trying to install and not with Windows itself.

I don't doubt that MS would include all of that shit if they could, however you have to understand that they are held back from doing so much shit due to legal reasons. Look at the fucking retarded EU -- they won't even let them bundle a basic media player with fucking Windows. It's ridiculous.
 
All kidding aside, computers are still FAR from foolproof.

Too old or too new software, updates, drivers, dependencies etc... there are plenty of times when the average user just clicks 'next' with the hope that it works... and when it doesn't I'm sure they give up. The stuff might not be difficult if you are a computer tech, but its all cryptic to most people.


Maybe Macs are better, I don't know.
 
I've switched to Chromebook and Chromebox for 99% of my computing. We have 3 Chromebooks and 2 Chromeboxes at home and that's pretty much all we use. I do have 3 Windows desktops but those are mainly used as SMB file servers. I think I last turned on my Yoga Windows laptop like 6 months ago.
