Why Does Win2K Take Forever To Boot?

Hi,
I finally got to try out Win2k last night. My sister was in from Cleveland and has Win2k pro on her work laptop, so I decided to check it out.

I didn't notice much of a difference bettween Win2k and Win98SE as far as user interface, but what I did notice was that it was so slow to boot up? Is this true with all Win2k or is there something going on with this laptop?

It seemed to hang on "Checking network settings". Did it take this long because it wasn't hooked up to a network?

BTW.. I don't know the speed of the laptop, but it's a P3 IBM Thinkpad with 128 mb's of RAM and a 16 gig hdd.

TIA,

Sal

I don't think hanging on "Checking network settings" is a boot :)

But yeah what juiio says is true.

Ok. You are all wrong. The client will try to find a DHCP server during the initial bootup of the computer. The issue is that the client is trying to find a Dynamic DNS server to update it's A records. What you will need to do it edit the PROPERTIES of the LOCAL AREA CONNECTION, and then edit the PROPERTIES of TCP/IP. Click on the ADVANCED button, then on the DNS tab on the new window that will pop up. Make sure the "REGISTER THIS CONNECTIONS ADDRESS IN THE DNS SERVER" is not checked. Then save your connection.

Only have this set if you have an Active Directory domain or you have internal Dynamic DNS servers.

Let me know if you have any questions on this.

Hehehe, pssh, who cares? Once you boot it, you'll never have to boot it up again. What is it gonna do? Crash on you? Heheheh...

Win2K rocks, and yes it does take longer to boot than the other OS's.

hi Shadow07 i tried that but it didnt help boot up speed really that much on my win2k pro. is there anything else to try to see if i can get a faster bootup?
mine takes around 1 min and 8 secs i wouls say about.
i guess dual processors help a lot with the bootup time i bet.
i just dont get what else makes win2k take forever to bootup mostly. Wish i could fine out so i could somehow make it as fast as win98 or even windows me if possible
win 98 bootup time would be fine

any help appreicated
thanks

I'm running Win2k and I love it. I don't really notice that much difference between win2k and win98SE except the blue screen from Win98.

I would think it all depends on what you have in your system.
I have Scsi card, network card so, it takes a little bit longer before I get to the log on screen.

Just my Opinion. I don't think I want to go back to Win98 again.
Win2k rocks.

For sure win2k rocks win98 or win98SE would always BSOD , freeze , or be a pain to me all the time.
i am so glad i went to win2k pro i just dont always like the slow startup and shutdown times i wish there was some way to speed it up and i guess the only way is to have dual cpus and SCSI HD, etc

There was a bug in Win2K SP0 and SP1 that would cause Windows to detect a device twice and subsequently load 2 drivers for the device. This happened to me with a PCMCIA controller, and caused Windows to pause significantly during the bootup process. Check your device manager to see if you have 2 of a certain device where you should only have one.

Oh, forgot to mention that even if you patched your system to SP2, the problems can remain if you installed Win2K as SP0 or SP1.

I trimmed a few seconds off of my boot time by going to the device manager and opening up the ide controller then double click the Primary or Secondary ide channel on the advanced settings tab set the device type to none.

Do this on channels that there are no devices. ;)

In my case I disabled 3 since my cdroms are SCSI. It seemed to speed up the boot about 7-8 seconds.

W2K is fairly slow to boot, I think longer than 98 or SE, WinMe boots faster than all of them but has it's own issues. We use W2K at work on a network and I use it at home w/o a network and don't see any differance in boot times.

windows 2000 seems to take much longer to boot for notebooks than for desktops. my desktop is only a p3-500mhz and it boots much faster than most p3-733 notebooks.

if speed is the issue ... install win95. i have that on my p2-233 thinkpad, and it boots up in like 15 seconds.

even if win2k takes the longest to bootup. i guess we cant always have the both of worlds , speed and stabilty. but thats ok
thanks
