Why does white chicken meat usually cost extra?

I always see "White Meat: Extra $1.99" or something on menus. Why is that? What's so good about white meat?

Because you typically know that the white meat really is chicken.

Beats me... I live in Western NY... wing capitol of the world.

Chicken wings are $1.89 a pound at the grocery store, and I've never seen them on sale... boneless skinless breast is usually on sale for $1.49 a pound. And, my local KFC is so disgustingly dirty inside, that I won't set foot through the door again.

Well, it seems to me that most people like white meat better. A chicken is about half white meat. Simple supply and demand.
