brxndxn, lol.

i'm guessing you meant to explain quatshifting? it's used mostly in AWD cars where you use the tip of your right foot to hold on the gas pedal and the heel on the brake and your left foot has full control over the clutch. its used for accelerating after cornering.

Hollywood sucks with specifics and just throws buzzwords around all the time. With car movies, computer hax0ring movies, law movies, anything.

Hollywood is a big dumb animal.

"Ooh shizz I better drop in a trojan horse into the mainframe to crack this 129 bit encryption to move these 3D blocks around and connect them to make a big shape that beholds all the secrets to the vault."

Maybe it's because Vin Diesel's character is so uber-l33t at driving that he knows some secret meaning for the term "double clutching"...

...or not.

alright. auto driver here. double clutching was explained... anyone mind explaining granny shifting? is it just normal clutch in, shift, clutch out?

also, driving another car along side a driver who is "double clutchin'", would you be able to tell that they were? or is this line just smack talk gone wrong?

IIRC (Correct me if I'm wrong)

But somewhere between synchromesh and angled gear teeth I thought the need to double just died out, except on trucks.

Large semi-truck transmissions need to handle too much torque to use synchromesh; also the gears on a truck transmission are straight cut as opposed to angled. Thus necessitating the use of double clutching when downshifting.

The really odd part is that (maybe I read wrong) but it seemed like in the movie they were talking about double clutching to up shift.

Well I didn't know there was such a term as granny shifting, but thats probably just regular, as in clutch in, shift, clutch out.

As far as I can tell whether another driver is double clutching, I don't think you could. Maybe if you could hear the engine rev pop as the driver synced the engine and gearbox speed in nuetral, but otherwise no.

I think bR has a video of a red ferarri that double-clutches on the upshfts(though unecessary, but it sounds "cool" or whatever)..the double clutching is audible on this car.

Someone told me once that the person wasn't double-clutching, but the more I listen to it, the more I disagree.. you can clearly hear the process.

maybe he was powershifting and the revs just climb that fast, although it does sound like he is double clutching...

IMO, that's him, his heavy right foot, and a set of big brass balls bouncing off the rev limiter. :Q

And yes, the revs will climb that fast.

i dont even know what Double-clutching is, but i do know that movie sucked

Basically this:
Clutch
Shift out of gear
clutch
shift into gear

I think its mostly used in semis / large trucks that have a different gear box.

It's used to speed the synchros while downshifting, so they aren't stressed by the sudden increase in engine speed. Basically it makes downshifting quicker and much smoother.

That's basically what he said, but it just doesen't sound right to me for some reason.. it seems I can hear more going on than that...

I'm going to rip the audio and listen to it slowly.... I swear I can hear the engine RPM drop for a split second(presumably as he shifts to neutral and then rev matches before shifting into gear, I guess).

You would be able to tell, thier shifts would take two seconds compared to half a second. :)

OK, I slowed it down to 30% of it's original speed.

You can clearly hear him let off the throttle, presumably shift into neutral, blip the throttle, and shift into gear. He does not just have his foot mashed while he shifts through the gears.

I knew I could hear all this at normal speed, it was just hard to tell because it's so fast.

I wonder how many of the tards in my town with their riced out cars are double clutching every time they shift gears now - just because of that line in the movie? That movie is like the Bible to that crowd.

It was worth it.. I was uncertain and curious myself... lol

I only had to download Pegasus TMPG MPEG encoder, demux the video, use AudioCoverter to convert the generated mp2 audio to MP3, use Sonique2 to write the file to a WAV played at 30% and then convert the WAV into MP3.. and upload it.. lol
