Why does UEFI/GPT take longer to boot than BIOS/MBR

I haven't updated my sig yet but I have a new shiny Haswell build using:

i5-4670 3.4Ghz
Asus H87I-PLUS
Corsair 2x4GB 1600Mhz RAM
Samsung 840 Evo 120GB
Windows 7 x64 SP1 installed in UEFI/GPT

It's fair to say my PC is very quick but before the Windows logo appears during boot, the screen is black and there is a flashing _ in the top left corner (MS DOS style) for nearly 5 seconds before the coloured Windows logo appears. That disappears after 1-2 seconds and then normal speed is resumed. I remember seeing something similar on my previous build (sig) when I tried GPT but I abandoned it and went back to MBR due to various software incompatibilities at the time. Going back to MBR on that rig removed the flashing _ and the boot time increased accordingly. I have a strong feeling that if I was to format my Haswell rig and go back to MBR, the same thing would happen.

Any ideas?
