Why does TV out suck all the time? And when will it get good?

We've been waiting for quite a while for TV out to get good. Anyone know when it will? I have a GeForce2 MX...I heard there was supposed to be an adapter card coming out for it that would have TV out and video capture. What happened to that?

Check this out. It's in japanese but it shows some interesting pictures.

The following is uncerimoniously ripped from hardocp.

"Impress is showing off a new HDTV output daughter board for Canopus Spectra 7200 and higher Geforce cards. Costs roughly $108 US, but only available in Japan I'm afraid. Check out the last pic on this page, full HDTV res out, makes reading text on a 50"+ screen easy. And at 1280x720....drool."

LOL, have you checked prices on 50"+ screens that can do that kind of resolution? Costs more than the average new car! The tax on a screen that good of that size will be several times more than a $100 daughterboard.

At a job I had a few years ago I used a Sun Sparc workstation and a 56" data-grade rear-projection monitor (made by Electrohome, now Christie Digital). 1200 x something resolution, very nice. But the monitor cost $42,000. And it was about as big as 2 refrigerators and weighed 800 pounds. That was some excellent TV-out, though.

BTW, 1080 is the highest HDTV resolution available.

But it would be cool if HDTV-ready sets with VGA inputs were widely available at affordable prices.

Workin', the 1080i resolution on HDTV sets is 1080 vertical lines, making it 1920x1080. They can easily handle 1280x720. 🙂 50" HDTV-ready projection TVs are around $2500 - $5000 USD (which isn't too bad, considering some 36" Wega models are upwards of $1200).

Sort of related.....is a DVD watchable on a 26" TV with the TV-out on a GeForce2? Specifically the Asus V7100/T...I usually use my monitor but sometimes it would be nice to have the bigger screen....does the TV-out on a GeForce2 look ok for that?

I don't want to read text or anything...just watch DVDs. Maybe play Quake3 or something on the bigger screen just for kicks 😉

Yeah but then I'd have to buy that funny little TVTool program...I already have my H+, so I might as well just keep it and save myself a few dollars on a the GeForce2 and get one without TV-out right hehehe 🙂

I do appreciate the suggestion though 🙂

the matrox g450 has dvd max, where it can show dvds in whatever resolution you like on a TV and expand the picture to fit the screen right.
sucky 3d speed though

Is it free? Oh I thought I saw something about registering the software, and assumed it involved money. Perhaps I'll have to take another look, thanks for the tip.

Yeah DVD max is sweet sh*t....if only matrox would release the G800 I'd be all over it, but the G450 has little more juice than my V3....
