Why does Tide cost 2x as much as any other detergent?

So usually when I go home for a weekend, I steal a box of my parent's detergent and use it for a long time. Well I forgot, so I had to go and actually buy my own detergent today. I was surprised to see just how much more Tide costs than any other detergent - Gain, Wisk, etc. My parents use the wisk liquid so that's what I got, but I am wondering, what makes Tide so much more expensive? Just ignorant consumers or does it really work better?
 
For equal loads, tide still cost a whole lot more. Do you really think I'm dumb enough to compare a 40 load box of wisk to a 120 load box of tide? what a useless post

i've got a box with 18 2-packs left. I'll sell them for $3.50 each or the whole box for $45. 😀
 
Consumer Reports tests show that all laundry detergents are not created equal, and Tide has always been rated pretty highly by them.

I'm not a brand-whore by any means, but I do like consistency. I use Tide because it always works great for me. My clothes seem to last a long time, and they usually come as clean as I can ever expect. Colors, which I wash in cold, come out clean, and the colors seem to last a good long time, while whites, usually washed in hot, last a long time without starting to look yellow or dingy.

My mom has always bought whatever was cheapest, but since I've been out on my own, I've used liquid Tide, and believe it or not, it seems to make a difference over time.
 
Well the Wisk and Tide web sites both show they are still available. But neither wal-mart nor HEB sell them anymore....

2 months ago, CU did another test of detergents. Tide with Bleach Quick Dissolving, powder, finished first...substantially better than the second finisher, Gain with Bleach. These were followed by Arm & Hammer with Color-Safe Bleach, Tide Quick Dissolving, and Wisk with ColorSafe Bleach. These were all powders which cleaned much better than any liquids.

While the Tide was a little more expensive than the other brands when compared on a per-load basis (@ .23 per load), it wasn't the most expensive detergent. It was beaten out by Wisk w/bleach powder @ .24, Wisk ColorSafe Bleaching liquid @ .27, and Tide with Bleach Alt. Deep Clean liquid @ .27 per load.

Cool.

I use Purex unflavored;No dye,and no stinky perfumes.

Tide always did work best,but the odor annoys me bad,especially on my sheets.

 
Tide made me break out with a rash when I was in the 1st grade. I haven't used it since. (so don't know if it would now) I know 2 other people that also break out... It must be some hella-strong soap. 😛

I only buy it when it's on sale. I check every time I'm in the store and I'll get a bottle even if I don't really need it if it's on sale for a good price. Same with cat food and litter. Seems those are *rarely* on sale.

I don't know if I'm reading that right but did they compare bleach detergents and ones without bleach to each other for cleaning whites. I assume they didn't use bleach on colored right?

Us too. Actually, we've gotten to where we buy the big super huge ~2 gallon container of it at Sams. It's nice since it lasts a long time and we don't have to worry about it for awhile.
