why does the win2k installation keep tellling me my drive is corrupt?

i installed a perfectly new hard drive, had win98 on it, and every time i try to do an upgrade to win2k it tells me midway thru the install that the c drive is corrupted and can not be repaired! if thats true how come windows 98 works? wtf!?!? i even did scan disk and no errors!!!

and now i'm looking for a win98 update of some kind, cant find the 2nd edition on ms's website...this is for my parents' 4 year old pos dell. i have the original install but it has no drivers, the resolution is stuck at 640, and i dont havea resource cd. i dont even know what parts are in this god damn mess.

i hope this made sense because my mind is destroyed right now. i need to sleep. i hate technology.

Hello Kev

1. Does that POS Dell have service tag? Its a little sticker on it somewhere with numbers/letters. The service tag should tell you the contents of the box. If not you just need to goto Dell's tech support, and select the model number. It should list everything for you.

2. Yes, its possible to run an OS with bad sectors on the hard drive. You might try Norton Sysmantec Disk Fragmentation program to defrag it first and see if there are bad sectors on the har drive. Did you run a Windows vs DOS scan disk? I had better luck running it in DOS, but as for Windows Norton has better for me.

3. Third option is to format the drive and this will put the bad sectors to side and so installation of the OS doesn't write to the bad sectors.

Try running scandisk in Win98. Doesn't sound like bad sectors; sounds like some sort of filesystem problem.

yeah i tried scandisk in win98 and a complete format, still no luck.

i guess im gonna stick them with win98, thanks for the help though - i was able to find the correct drivers with the service tag

Dell also usually has system-specific diagnostics; you may want to download those and give the system a full check, just to see if there are any hardware problems.
