Why does the Voodoo 3 run so hot?

Recently I got my old 400mhz AMD K6-2 machine up and running and it has a Voodoo 3 card in it. The case is open so I put my hand in and tested the temperature of it's heat sink. Much to my surprise it was burning hot and no 3D apps were even running. Is it normal for it to run hot like that?

Yes they run hot, I put a old 486 Fan on mine to cool it down but it is not needed.

Yes mine was upto 65 C so I added a fan on the heatsink and lowered the temp to 45 but I still can't get it to 185

LOL,yep they run hot, hot enough to fry a egg, not joking
I put a slot fan under mine and then put a case fan blowing in it also, it never even got warm after that running overclocked for hours

Yes, it runs hot, but it is normal.
Don´t need a fan unless your case is muffled or you plan to o´c.
I attached a fan to my 3500TV after a good dose of thermal paste and it easily reaches 200 MHz (could try more but the thing is already damn fast...)
I can´t monitor its temperature but, no doubt, its much lower than the original (ie, 183 MHz and no fan).

Regards, Ben.

yes, all those Voodoo 3's ran verh hot. That is why alot of people mounted small fans on the heatsink. Then overclocked them while feeling safer.

The V3 runs hot. Like other people, I put a slot fan two spaces away from it. I used the slot fan more to pull away the heat so it didn't make the case any warmer. I was able to overclock my V3 3000 up to 183 Mhz with just the slot fan nearby.

I also added a fan to mine and it helped. Took the fan off an old 486 heat sink.
