Why does the US make bad laws and then still act politically correct?

With the passage of a whole group of freedom restricting bills, the US government is becoming increasingly "police-like". Supposedly, there is a new law that orders ISPs to keep all emails on record ofr 90 days so the government can review them.

There have been many cases where the Federal government has recently restricted our freedoms. More than ever, I feel that corporations truely rule this country. Enron and Worldcom are just two "old world" examples of the worst of the worst (and most obvious). Im more concerned about the behind the scenes events. Microsoft and others are slowly planning to force us to pay every time we turn our computers on or make a phone call. (And now the government can pretty much tap all those conversations !)

Yet, at the same time, the government refuses to use racial profiling when it *might actually work* at places like airports. The government refuses to station police on borders. The government refuses to pay for a few damn bomb detectors or fork over for newer x-ray machines.

What is wrong with the US government these days?

I am NOT antigovernment. I am pretty much a "liberal" person. Ive even been accused of being pro-big government on this very forum. However, I am also starting to see the points my more right-wing fellow citizens have been making for years--this country is not on the right path, and the problems seem to originate with our government (and I would add corporations).

Moreover, I call upon people on this forum to realize that big business is not good for us any more than big government. Obviously, America is great partly because its centralized, but we also need to make sure that the rights of the individual are never destroyed.

In the 21st century, we need solutions that work. Thats why we have a democracy. Lets just pray that it isnt bought out by the likes of Enron. Then we are ALL screwed.

Welcome to libertarianism. :D

Although, it has far more to do with government than corporations.

[edit] let me elaborate...

A corporation can only have as much power as a government gives it. Without government forcing people to do things for businesses, a corporation cannot have power over you unless you let it.

There's a new law which says they can imprison you for bumping your own government conspiracy threads. Let it drop, and let no one speak of this ever again.

Glad you got your head out of the sand. Basically, we're all screwed because most people just don't see what is going on and refuse to do anything about it. Tough luck.

Moreover, I call upon people on this forum to realize that big business is not good for us any more than big government.

I have never had anyone from General Motors tell me that I have to buy their cars or they will put me in jail. But let me tell the Government that it is none of their business that I as an adult refuse to wear a seat belt and they will take money out of my pocket by the force of law to fine me, or even put me in jail if I refuse to give them my money.

I have never had anyone from the big Oil Company's tell me that I have to buy their brand of gasoline or they will put me in jail, I could even decide to ride a bike and they could do nothing about it. But let me tell the Government that it is none of their business whether I as a law biding citizen choose to own a gun to protect myself from criminals, and they will come to put me in jail.

I have never had anyone from Microsoft tell me that I have to use Windows exclusively or they will put me in jail, even a couple of years ago when I decided to try Beos there was no midnight knock on the door by Bill Gates, standing on the other side waiting with hand cuffs ready to clamp them on and take me away. But let me tell the Government that I refuse to participate in their lousy retirement program because I believe I can do better for myself. For this they will come to put me in jail.

I have no love for big business, but when it comes to a choice between Corporations and Government, it is no contest as to who is more dangerous to our freedoms.

Obviously, America is great partly because its centralized,

Remember that Government is the only Institution that we give power over us by the force of arms. Do we really want it to be too centralized.

People forget America is an experiment..subject to failure. Tomorrow is guaranteed to no one..PC or otherwise. And like everything else, failure has a beginning.
