I have something similar, not made in Germany, though

It soaks up a lot of water. They sell them in the automotive section of Walmart.

Shamois - originally packaged for drying cars. They all work as good as the ShamWow one does though, I used to use them for backpacking.

Chamois' are usually leather, this is synthetic.

If anyone has ever been to a state or county fair, there are demonstration booths set up selling things like Shamwow. At each booth there is a salesperson hooked up to a loudspeaker system with a headset as the microphone. The guy in the commercial is set up to look like one of these county fair demo guys.
