Why does the post office care...

if someone puts something in my mailbox?

I bought it. I installed it. I maintain it. Yet they seem to feel that only US mail can be put inside it?

Why is that?

govt sponsored monopoly FTW

Because you can be a cell and use your mailbox to distribute info you and your group doesn't want the government to know.

Assuming you want a serious answer, this is why.

Just put another one next to it and don't register it as a mailbox.

but that one can't be in the right of way, it has to actually be on your property. typically mailboxes are in the right of way that belongs to the city/county, etc

Wait until the local kids with nothing to do womp on it with a baseball bat. The Post Office will care less about that. Except that they'll inform you they're ceasing delivery to your damaged mailbox.

They for some reason think it's my responsibility to clear the shoulder of the road by my mailbox. The road commission is responsible for that. But if we get a big snow, and my delivery person has her panties in a bunch that day, well, another notice that my delivery is going to be suspended.

My last house they wanted the box moved to the other side of the road. Two months later they wanted it moved back. Once again, another notice.

Don't get me started on the Postal Service because I have more stories.

someone's post got deleted...

Anyways, there are plenty of reasons why they don't allow anyone other than the owner or postal employees to touch a mailbox - theft for one. Who's to tell the difference between someone handing out flyers, versus someone checking mailboxes to steal checks & other stuff?

my father and i use my mailbox for notes, letters and invoices to each other... almost daily, for years. no one has said a word to me.
