Why does the media give Apple so much attention?

Just wondering. For example, take the iPod - every damn paper and site and a review of it when it came out and lots of prase....Now Rio comes out with a much better player (RioRiot) and it has hardly been mentioned everywhere.

This always happens...with the iMac (article in Time about it) etc

i would say because when Apple releases something good it is a big deal. When a company releases something and that company is already held in high regard, not much is made of it. Maybe the media is trying to show that Apple doesn't release many good products and deserves a lot of attention when they do? i don't know...just my opinion.

Media = Advertisers = Graphic Artists = Die-hard mac users.

I have actually been quite surprised and happy to see dell step into the movie scene and start provide computers like Apple has for so long.

Why does the media give Apple a lot of attention? That's easy!

People like looking at pretty and shiny things on TV! :)

This is espically true when news viewers get depressed from all the recent war and terrorism news, and want a diversion to cheer them up. A Gateway or a Dell might be more productive and a better value, but they just don't look as cool on TV. The "Wow" factor just isn't there for Joe-six pack.

One reason is because they do things that are new and different. The new iMac, the iPod, the old iMac, etc. Sure the Rio Riot is better (aside from useability, which may be better/same/worse), but Apple can/will drop a bigger HD in the iPod to equal the storage of the Riot. Adding a tuner can't be too hard.

The reason the iPod got so much attention is because it was a big step ahead. The second guy to do something never gets the same fanfare.

That RioRiot just might be the mp3-player I have been waiting for. Can't get an iPod, I'm allergic to apples :D.

Now, if SonicBlue just added Ogg-support...

Actually, I'm kind of diggin' that new PowerMac G4 with dual 1Ghz G4 PowerPC processors. What's really holding me back is that they're behind the curve on the whole DDR thing, and seriously need to redesign their mobo chipsets.

I'm really surprised that I am the first to say this . . .

Most people will agree that Mac's biggest advantage is in the graphic design / publishing applications. Newspapers and magazines USE macs and LIKE macs. When something new and mac related comes out, its important to the people who make the newspapers and magazines, and thats why they write about it.

The rio volt is interesting but it's only USB? Not even USB 2.0. And that means long transfers.....I don't see anything that makes it superior to the iPod.

The iPod is not the greatest thing, but it sure does a good job for being so little. (those that own one know what i mean). It acts as a firewire drive, so i can use it as a firewire target drive, can boot from it if i need to (just load OS on the iPod) and play 4.5 gigs of music. Oh, and those songs upload quick through the firewire.....
I can charge it from my laptop without worrying about plugging it in to a wall to recharge it.

So what can the rio do better?

At least archos has somethig that can do more, and offer more.

Does Ipod have PC software available yet?!?!?! That would be dumb of them to ignore like, what, 95% of the personal computer market. I read about one before but there was no release date and it wasnt produced be Apple. It was one of the recent AnAndtech articles I believe.

Works fine for those of us that use a Mac. I know software is on the way for windows to use it, XPlay, but it's still early

I'm still surpised by the complete ignorance of Apple bashers...

Like someone else said, the media almost exclusively uses Apple machines. Also, Apple machines are nice to look at. Maybe they would cover new Gateway stuff if it wasn't just another grey box. The new iMac is news because it is a significant departure from any other computer around.

The riot looks nice, but it is bigger and heavier than the iPod and it lacks firewire. When I buy an mp3 player, I'll definately look at it and compare it to the iPod before I buy one.

IMHO, the size, weight, and useability is what makes the iPod so attractive.

People like to bash what they don't know, and they feel they need something to attack.
I don't know if it's because they are insecure about what they have, or what someone else offers. It's the same with movies, books, and other things. People have to put down what they do not know or understand.

It's called ignorance.

Considering most poeple don't have collections bigger than 20GB, the USB vs. FireWire argument is almost void.

The Rio offers 4x more storage, FM tuner and voice recorder in a slightly larger package (an inch on each side) for $400
The iPod, while being slighly smaller, offers less storage, fewer features and costs (for PCs who need the software and a 1394 card) about $60 more.

I don't remember Creative getting so much attention when it came out with the Jukebox.

You can't be serious. Have you ever tried sending lots of info over USB? It takes just about forever.

12 MBps vs. 400 Mbps. Hmmm.... It would literally take hours to transfer the data over via USB. I transfer data over 100 Mbps Ethernet from laptop to desktop and I can assure you it's painfully slow to transfer even 6 GB on 100BaseT.

Anything in this class without either Firewire or USB 2 is not terribly practical IMO.
