Why does steering on the new Civics and Accords suck?

So i've got a '03 civic lx sedan right now, and i've noticed the steering is kinda messed up...(i noticed this when I was test driving the '03 accords as well). I've read that the accords have some kind of variable steering that apparently is related to the speed of the car (i'm assuming the new civics have it as well, from what i can tell).

When did they start this? My '98 civic didn't have this, and right now this car just feels pretty damn awkward...what are the benefits of even having this? (other than to annoy me :()

I dunno. My 91 Accord has variable assist power steering but I've never noticed it detracting from the driveability of the car.

I haven't test driven an '03 Honda yet because it's dangerous.

I might buy one.

Steering on our '02 Accord SE is just fine.

I thought you just spend all your money on hot deals? Do you own 34 econoboxes, each with their own story, and probably have been haggled thousands below invoice? :D

I dunno about Honda but a lot of cars have a variable assist steering system nowadays. Even Ford did this back in the early 90's.

If I told you, I'd have to castrate then play Celine Dion's greatest hits to you.

So trust me you don't even wanna go there.

Maybe there's something wrong with your power steering? I've got a '03 TL-S and it doesnt feel strange at all ... steering feels pretty good from about 0-130 (haven't gone any faster to say).

you mean speed sensative steering? it's on a lot of cars now, it's actually a neat feature, save you energy at low speed and stablize the car at high speed. what "bad" symptoms you got?

of course tq steering is better but it's more on sport cars. LiQiCE, the tl-s has tq steering, not speed sensitive.

actually a bit more explanation

speed sensitive steering:
at low speed, they let the steering wheel turns more easily, so say when you are in the parking lot doing 5mph you don't find yourself having a hard time turning. but at high speed, they tighten up the steering wheel, so when you are racing at 130mph on the freeway you don't turn the car easily

problem with that is say when you floor your car from stoplight, the steering wheel (and the car) could pull left and right pretty hard coz' the speed is still SLOW. solution?

torque sensitive steering:
the sensor detects how much torque is asserted at the wheels and use that to determine if the steering should be tight or loose. so when you floor your car or especially for those with heavy foot, even when you are doing local driving you don't find yourself having a hard time with the steering wheel

tq sensitive steering wheel is mostly find in sport cars from what i know.

yeah i think they've been doing the variable assist steering for some time. i hope you just drove some lemons or something, because i've always loved honda steering. my 91 accord is just heaven. the civics were good too, but not nearly as responsive as the accords and they understeer a lot more.

I think you have the fewest posts of any Elite member. Not that postcount matters, but what did you do to deserve Elite? Trollhunters?

Aw yeah, you got the hybrid! That rocks! Manual or CVT? What's your average mileage? How much was the tax incentive? How do you like it?
