If you think about it, only two Star Trek actors have survived to find real work after star trek: Patrick Stewart and Jeri Ryan. Why can't most star trek actors ever get another job after trek?

William Shatner as what? The Big Giant Head in 3 episodes of 3rd Rock? Leonard Nimoy as a guest on The Simpsons? Come on, they've hardly done anything.

Typecasting, it happens to many actors in long-running TV series unless they work hard to get parts against type in movies or on other shows.

Besides, Michael Dorn is weasel! so he's doing OK :)

I've seen the guy that plays Chief O'Brien in a couple of movies since his TNG days (Con Air for one). Shatner also had a Cop Series after his Star Trek Days (the Series) not to mention a number of commercials.

Well, Patrick Stewart is Prof X in the X-men movies... the majority of the cast weren't huge megastars to begin with anywho.

My theory... Star Trek is more storywriters than acting anyways.

That's because people concentrate on Star Trek for some reason. Just look at it this way, what percentage of TV actors have more than 2 successful TV shows? Or make it big on the big screen? The percentage is VERY low.

William Shatner as what? The Big Giant Head in 3 episodes of 3rd Rock? Leonard Nimoy as a guest on The Simpsons? Come on, they've hardly done anything.
someone doesn't know how to use IMDB.

If you go look up William Shatner on IMDB, there's a lot of stuff there. Most of it you've never heard of. A lot of it is appearances as himself, or hosting some TV show. He hasn't had any real recognizable roles since Star Trek... nothing like Patrick Stewart's Professor X.

Patrick Stewart is a much better actor than Shatner (understatement of the year)

Look at Mark Hamil and Star Wars. He got typecase as a Jedi. There aren't too many roles for Jedi.

However he did make an appearance in "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back"... lol...

Lead role in TJ Hooker TV series, supporting role in TekWar movies/series, but I'll grant most of his other work has been self-parodying bit parts in movies like Airplane 2, National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon, etc.

Colm Meaney has had a decent non-Trek movie career, LeVar Burton has his edu-TV work. Dorn has done some good voice acting work (Weasel, Fallout 2, narrator for various shows). Wil Wheaton has his own website ;)

He was great as The Joker in the animated Batman series. And, uh, .... he was in a bad Stephen King movie.
