er... friend? It is out. But many games have patches before the release date to offer a more stable release that they couldn't get to before shipping. Multiplayer heavy games have lots of patches out at release to make it more stable.

You have to remember that the actual game code they release is already a couple weeks old by the time they press the cds. I think people must continue testing it between the time they release the gold code to manufacture and the actual release date to the public.

Release dates tend to be a contrivance of the publisher and it's marketing people, whilst meanwhile the developer keeps begging for more time. There's almost always that "one more thing" that the developer/support staff are wishing to tweak, or another map to add, etc.

Consider yourself lucky when content or patches are added to a game you are interested in. VUG pulled the plug on support for Tribes:Vengeance almost immediately upon release, then waited for months to admit it, having promised all the while a patch that was never to come.

Just recently.

Anyhow, I'd much rather hear someone bitching about a patch being out for a game upon it's release than people bitching about where is the patch to fix all the damn problems.

they also do this to fight the pirated copies of the game that appear before the game even reaches the shelves...
