Why does some sausage taste like pine?

Does anybody know? I've been wondering for a long time. Is it just me? I can't think of any reason why any company would choose to put a piney flavor into any meat, it certainly is not very good. At Denny's last night it tasted like I was eating a pine cone...ridiculous, I say!

Well, no its not just Denny's. It's been in a lot of different places. I find that the sausage links usually have the piney taste.

Perhaps that particular recipe has pine nuts in it or something. I'm not a sausage connoisseur, but I've never experienced this phenomenon before.

Very good!

Rosymary and sage are spices that are put into breakfast sausage that could have a "piney" taste to some people. I personally think it's the sage as it has a vrey pungent woody taste.

or they could use pine wood to burn under the sausage why it is cooking hence the term "smoked" sausage. the fumes from the fire with pine will get into the sausage and leave a very good smell to it.

I figured some people would ask how I know what pine tastes like. Well, since taste is about 70% smell and I've smelled pine before, I know what it would taste like.

I don't know how the rosemary/sage or pine smoked phenomenon got started. It makes otherwise good sausage taste really bad. I can't believe that the majority of the population prefers a piney taste in their sausage. We should boycott the sausage makers! Don't let this practice continue any longer!

anyway..that was fun. thanks for the info.

Do people actually smoke meats with pine? I've heard of hickory smoking and such, but pine doesn't seem like a great flavor for meat to me 😛

Pine Sol taste great! I gargle with it and use it to marinade meats with. Then, afterwards, not to be wasteful, I use it to mop the floors.

you use hard woods to smoke. pine wouldn't really do. smoking doesn't necessarily cook the food either.

i'm going with the sage answer.

No he don't there's red, black and Italian pine for example. It's the Italian pines whats got the pine nuts. I run over the cones all the time to help the squirrles who drop them from great heights onto the roadways.

One thing I know. I've eaten all kinds of sausage and none of it tastes like pine. You Sir, are simply confused. 😀
