Why does sleeping under a window or fan cause a cold?

Monday night I opened up my bedroom window to let a little air circulate through the room. It was roughly about 74 degrees that night, the next morning I woke up with a sore throat and a stuffy nose. I think its breaking today but its kind of baffling that a person could catch a cold just from sleeping in a draft. (ironically my wife is fine)

Does the same thing happen when you're camping and sleeping in the open?
 
Because you are breathing through your mouth when you sleep, and that cold air dries your throat out, causing you to get a sore throat.

But the air does not make you sick.

All germs have an incubation period. That is, a period of time before the germs' numbers reach critical mass, causing symptoms.

Also, it is allergy season. You may not have a cold, but an allergy. Allergies can become sinus infections (but usually not overnight).

There is a range of incubation period. In some cases can take as less as a week and as more as three weeks (this is for common flu, I think)
 
Ihe draft cool exposed parts of your body. So this reduces the blood circulation in these parts, thus rendering your immune system less functional. And the immune system actually also have a working optimum at a higher degree than 37C. Also the air dries out your mucus glands (so they need to produce more mucus, and because it gets dried out it gets stickier.). All these things make you more suspecticle for bacterial infections.

I've heard anywhere from 24hrs to 3 days for common cold type baddies...

ok, then it was some other virus/bacteria/something. However, the incubation time varies - and sometime varies wildly
 
Cold air, moving air, or an open window cannot give you a cold. Though the open window could aggravate a person's allergies if they have any.
