Why does salt on a wound hurt, but not other spices like pepper or garlic?

What is it about NaCl that makes it so painful on a wound?

The fact that we use salt, peppers, and garlic as spices has nothing to do with whether they would hurt. I fail to see the connection between salt and oregano that would compel you to compare them.

NaCl is more basic, which explains why it would sting

Holy sh!t, where did you people learn chemistry? NaCl is an ionic compound and a salt. It's the net result of the reaction between an acid and a base to yield water and a salt. NaCl is neither acidic nor basic.

The reason it hurts to put salt on a wound is because sodium (Na+) is the primary cation involved in action potentiation in neurons. In the simplest terms, sodium is what drives signaling in the nervous system.

HAHAHA this is the funniest thing I've ever seen! take middle school chemistry and then report back to anandtech forum boards please.

Salt makes water (blood contains water) more conductive (conductivity allows electricity to pass through more easily), making electrical signals (generated by neurons) stronger.

Don't you have to have an OH to be more basic?

Table salt is just that: a salt.

Edit: Nevermind, I thought you were talking to DingDingDao too.
