Why does Outlook say it's not a .pst file?

I did a backup, exported my Outlook 2000 in a valid .pst file. Now I did a reinstall of Windows, and have tried Outlook 2000 and 2003, and it keeps saying "not a valid .pst file."

Help please!! I need this data, it's all mission critical and I dont know how to read it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you importing the .PST file (choosing "Import from another program of file")?
That is the ONLY way to get mail imported from 2000 to 2003.

If you have a lot of folders in within the mail file Outlook 2000 acts funky when simply copying the PST file.

Outlook 2003 has compatiblity issues with older .PST files.

Make a copy of the .pst file and run

Scanpst.exe

on it. It may have gotten some errors, scanpst can sometimes fix those.
